Meta is expanding its AI-powered translation feature for Reels and adding support for Hindi and Portuguese on both Instagram and Facebook. The update aims to make Reels more accessible across languages and allow a wider global audience to enjoy content seamlessly. Here’s more on that.

The company first launched this AI translation tool in August after initially previewing it at the Meta Connect conference last year. At first, it was only offering support for English and Spanish language translations.

The platforms now add support for Hindi and Portuguese while Meta is looking to strengthen its reach in two of its largest creator markets, India and Brazil.

Announcing the expansion, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a video post, “Big news for Reels: we’re launching translations using Meta AI in more languages. It’s available for Hindi, Portuguese, Spanish and English now and we’re working on adding more soon. Check it out!”

Zuckerberg shared the news through a series of video clips, highlighting how the company’s AI translation tool can help creators and audiences connect across language barriers.

Meanwhile, Instagram Head Adam Mosseri also explained the importance of the feature in a video on Instagram, saying, “Most of the videos on Instagram are in a language you don’t speak, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t interested in them.” Mosseri then went on to dub the rest of his video in Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese using Meta AI, showcasing the technology in action.

According to Meta, the feature uses Meta AI to automatically translate, dub, and lip-sync video content. It allows creators to share their Reels in multiple languages without losing the natural tone and style of their voice. With this update, the AI translation feature now supports four languages, which are English, Spanish, Hindi, and Portuguese. The company is expected to add more languages in future updates.

How Meta AI Translation for Reels Works?

Meta explains that its AI system replicates the creator’s original voice tone and sound to generate translated audio that feels authentic and natural across languages. An optional lip-syncing feature aligns the translated voice with the speaker’s mouth movements, creating a more realistic viewing experience.

The company revealed that this technology has been in development since its initial announcement in 2024 with direct feedback from creators helping refine and enhance the feature.

Creators uploading a new Reel on Facebook or Instagram will now see an option labelled “Translate your voice with Meta AI.” By selecting this, they can choose whether to enable lip-syncing for the translated version.

Before publishing, creators can preview their Reel, receive a notification to review, and approve the translation before posting it live.

Meta AI Translation in Reels – Availability

The translation service is free to use for Facebook creators with at least 1,000 followers and for all public Instagram accounts in regions where Meta AI is currently available.

Once enabled, the feature will automatically translate Reels for international viewers.

Viewers can also customise their experience using built-in settings. All translated videos will display a “Translated with Meta AI” label. Users can choose to turn off translations or switch back to the original audio through the three-dot settings menu under the audio and language options.

Announcing the feature in a blog post, Meta said, “Imagine discovering a reel that makes you laugh, inspires you, or teaches you something new, no matter where it was created or what language it was filmed in. That’s the future we’re building at Meta.” It is clear that Meta is positioning Reels as a truly global content platform and helping creators reach audiences beyond language barriers. Voicing this, the tech giant also added, “Translations with Meta AI is just one way we’re bringing the best content to audiences and finding innovative new ways to connect people around the world.”
