Taiwanese chip design leader MediaTek is planning on expanding its workforce significantly in India.

According to a recent report by The Times of India, this move will give a big push to the Government of India’s semiconductor localisation plans going forward.

The move also highlights MediaTek’s growing presence as a top chip supplier for smartphones in the country.

According to data from Counterpoint, MediaTek has overtaken its American competitor Qualcomm, supplying chips for both budget and premium smartphones.

MediaTek sees enormous growth potential with India rapidly transitioning from 4G to 5G technology.

In its report, ToI quoted MediaTek’s global VP for corporate marketing Finbarr Moynihan saying, “There are a lot of exciting opportunities that we see in India. First and foremost are smartphones. We’re going through a massive 4G to 5G transition. It’s happening very quickly here.”

More consumers are leaning toward premium devices even as global smartphone sales remain stable.

This shift drives the need for advanced chips, which is a segment where MediaTek is well-prepared to meet demand.

MediaTek already has a substantial R&D team in India contributing to global technology platforms.

The company views India’s growing electronics production and consumption as a vital opportunity.

Underlining the significance of Indian engineering talent, MediaTek India MD Anku Jain said, “India is one of those rare countries which has a combination of English-speaking skills, and good engineering. This is unique, and not many countries can boast of this.”

MediaTek currently employs over 1000 engineers across Bengaluru, Noida and Mumbai.

The company aims to further integrate Indian talent into its global R&D efforts and solidify its role as a key player in worldwide chip design and development with plans to grow its workforce.
