Apple’s smart glasses are getting closer to becoming a reality, according to a new report.

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that Apple is still working on its own pair of smart glasses. The product, which is currently codenamed N50, will combine some of the company’s AI developments into a pair of glasses that, hopefully, won’t be too expensive.

We have previously reported on how Apple’s big dream is to build industry-leading augmented reality glasses. But that’s still a few years away from being something regular consumers can actually buy.

Reports suggest Apple is aiming to make a simpler pair of smart glasses, which will be something more like what Meta has done with its Ray-Ban collaboration. Meta’s smart glasses have gotten pretty popular, packing in a bunch of tech into a fairly normal-looking pair of glasses. They include cameras, microphones, speakers for listening to audio and even an AI assistant, but interestingly, no displays yet.

Apple’s idea is pretty similar. Gurman writes, “This device isn’t close to being ready yet, but the idea is to turn glasses into an Apple Intelligence device. The product will analyze the surrounding environment and feed information to the wearer, though it will stop well short of true augmented reality.”

One thing still up in the air is whether the Apple glasses will be able to take photos. In the past, Gurman has pointed out that Apple might avoid adding cameras because of privacy concerns but that decision hasn’t been finalised yet.

Gurman also mentioned again that Apple is working on a new version of AirPods with cameras built in. Those would also help push the company’s Visual Intelligence technology into new kinds of devices.

If everything goes according to plan, both the smart glasses and the camera-equipped AirPods will likely hit the market around 2027.

FAQs

Q1. Is Apple working on smart glasses, and what features will they have?

Answer. Yes, Apple is developing AI-powered smart glasses (codenamed N50) that will analyse the environment and provide information to the wearer. However, they will not offer full augmented reality capabilities.

Q2. How will Apple’s smart glasses compare to Meta’s Ray-Ban collaboration?

Answer. Apple’s glasses are expected to be similar to Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, featuring microphones, speakers, and possibly cameras. However, Apple has yet to decide whether to include cameras due to privacy concerns.

Q3. When will Apple’s smart glasses be released?

Answer. If everything goes according to plan, Apple’s smart glasses and a new version of AirPods with built-in cameras will likely launch around 2027.

Instagram Edits Hits 7M Downloads in First Week, Surpasses CapCut’s Launch Numbers

0

Highlights

  • Instagram Edits hit 7.1M downloads in its first week surpassing CapCut’s early numbers.
  • It topped the U.S. App Store charts upon launch.
  • It had 112 times more U.S. downloads than CapCut in its first three days.
  • The app is praised for its ease of use, 4K video support and ad-free experience, but lacks CapCut’s templates and transitions.

Instagram recently launched its Instagram Edits app, designed to help users easily create videos for Instagram Reels, Stories and other posts. And it seems Meta’s new video creation app had a bigger launch than its rival ByteDance’s CapCut.

According to app intelligence firm Appfigures, the new app was downloaded an estimated 702,900 times on iOS in just its first two days. That’s about 37 times more than CapCut’s iOS downloads during its early days.

Edits quickly reached 1.2 million downloads on iOS and 5.9 million on Android, totaling 7.1 million downloads. For comparison, CapCut was downloaded only 83,500 times across iOS and Android in its first three days. To be fair, CapCut was initially available in only half of the global markets but even if its early numbers were doubled or tripled, Edits would still be way ahead.

In the U.S. alone, Edits was downloaded 381,000 times in its first three days. CapCut, by contrast, managed just 3,400 downloads during its U.S. launch. That makes Edits’ U.S. debut a whopping 112 times bigger than CapCut’s.

The app’s fast start helped it climb the App Store rankings quickly.

According to Appfigures, Edits’ strong debut could help drive even more downloads and boost competition. It’s a clear example of how powerful Meta’s network effects can be when launching new apps tied into its massive social platforms.

On its launch day April 22, Edits hit No. 1 on the U.S. iPhone App Store charts for both Top Overall apps and Top Non-Game apps. It slipped to No. 2 by day two and stayed there, before dropping to No. 3 by Friday.

Because App Store rankings are based on download numbers and the speed of installs, Edits ranked far higher than CapCut did in its first three days. CapCut, during its own launch, placed at No. 14 Overall and No. 10 among top non-game apps in the U.S.

That said, Edits still has a long road ahead to match CapCut’s total reach. Since launching in April 2020, CapCut has been downloaded 1.22 billion times worldwide across iOS and Android (excluding China).

As for initial app reviews, creators have had mixed feelings about Edits if social media marketing consultant Lia Haberman’s word in her latest newsletter is to be believed. It received thumbs-up for its easy-to-use design, built-in analytics, 4K video support, watermark-free exports and the fact that it’s ad-free. However, Edits at the moment doesn’t have features that CapCut offers such as templates and range of transition effects.

Experts believe Edits could close the gap with CapCut soon, though it’s possible Meta could eventually add a paid tier or introduce ads to monetise the app.

FAQs

Q1. How many downloads did Instagram Edits get in its first week?

Answer. Instagram Edits reached 7.1 million downloads in its first week—1.2M on iOS and 5.9M on Android—far surpassing CapCut’s early launch numbers.

Q2. How does Instagram Edits compare to CapCut in terms of initial adoption?

Answer. Edits had 112 times more U.S. downloads than CapCut in its first three days and quickly climbed the App Store rankings, reaching No. 1 on the U.S. iPhone charts.

Q3. What are the key features and drawbacks of Instagram Edits?

Answer. Edits is praised for its easy-to-use design, built-in analytics, 4K video support, watermark-free exports, and ad-free experience. However, it lacks templates and transition effects available in CapCut.

Netflix is rolling out a new subtitle option that makes watching movies and shows a little less distracting. Netflix subtitles currently included audio cues and speaker names to help viewers with hearing impairments better follow along. While that version will still be available, you will now have an added option with just the dialogue, no sound effects or character labels.

Apple Plans to Shift All U.S. iPhone Imports to India by 2027: Report

0

Highlights

  • Apple reportedly plans to import nearly all U.S. iPhones from India by 2027.
  • This would require India to produce over 60 million iPhones per year.
  • Apple accelerated its shift away from China due to high tariffs (up to 145%) and U.S. trade policies.
  • The transition helps Apple reduce reliance on China, though changing U.S. trade policies could impact plans before 2027.

image

Apple is planning a major change in how it supplies iPhones to the U.S. According to Bloomberg and The Financial Times, the company wants to import nearly all iPhones sold in the U.S. from India instead of China by the end of 2027.

To pull this off, India would need to produce over 60 million iPhones per year just to meet U.S. demand. That means Apple’s total iPhone output in India would need to double, reaching around 80 million units annually.

Apple had already started shifting some production away from China before the Trump administration. But the trade war and recent tariffs have really sped things up. Back in February, when President Trump introduced plans for reciprocal tariffs, Apple’s India-based iPhone production saw a sharp boost.

According to a recent Reuters report, “Apple has already stepped up production in India to beat U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs, shipping some 600 tons of iPhones worth $2 billion to the United States in March. The shipments from India marked a record for both its contractors Tata and Foxconn, with the latter alone accounting for smartphones worth $1.3 billion.”

At one point, Apple was hit with tariffs as high as 145% on iPhones imported from China. While there’s currently a tariff exemption for smartphones, Chinese-made iPhones are still subject to a 20% tariff, while iPhones from India aren’t taxed at all under current rules.

Of course, U.S. trade policies change often, so things could look different by late 2027. Still, this move helps Apple diversify its supply chain, which is a smart play in an unpredictable global trade environment.

FAQs

Q1. Why is Apple shifting U.S. iPhone imports to India?

Answer. Apple plans to import nearly all U.S. iPhones from India by 2027, aiming to diversify its supply chain and reduce reliance on China.

Q2. What role do tariffs play in the recent change in Apple’s plans?

Answer. Apple faced high tariffs (up to 145%) on Chinese-made iPhones, while Indian-made iPhones currently aren’t taxed at all under U.S. trade rules.

Q3. How many iPhones will India need to produce for this transition?

Answer. India must produce over 60 million iPhones per year to meet U.S. demand, requiring total iPhone output in India to reach 80 million annually.

Google has launched a free battery replacement program for Pixel 7a users after reports of swelling batteries started to surface. The issue affects some units of the 2023 mid-range phone and can cause the back panel to bulge, the cover to come loose, or the battery to drain faster than usual.

In a support post, Google confirmed that certain Pixel 7a devices are experiencing “unexpected battery swelling.” This follows similar battery-related issues in previous Pixel A series phones like the Pixel 4a, which saw battery life drop sharply after an update, and the Pixel 9a, which reportedly degrades after 200 charge cycles.

How To Know If Your Pixel 7a Phone Has A Problem?

  • Visible swelling – if the phone is thicker than normal, or you can feel or notice the back cover showing a bulge.
  • Phone cover separation – The best way to recognise the issue is to pay attention to the phone cover. There may be gaps or openings on the edges, which could mean the back is bulging.
  • Battery performance issues – Also, you can pay attention to how your battery is performing. Your phone may be draining faster than usual even with low usage.

What’s Google Offering?

If you’re affected, you may be eligible for:

  • A one-time free battery replacement, or
  • Compensation up to $456, depending on where you live and your device’s condition.

Who Can Get It?

The offer is available to Pixel 7a owners in the US, India, Canada, the UK, Germany, Japan and Singapore. In these countries, you can visit a walk-in repair centre or, in the US and India, send in your phone by mail, though it’s subject to parts being in stock.

If you live outside these supported regions (like in Australia or parts of the EEA), Google is offering alternative options:

  • A $200 payment
  • A $300 discount for the Google Store
  • Or up to $456 in compensation for devices still under warranty (amounts are converted to local currency)

If your phone has liquid damage, a cracked screen, or other physical damage, it might not qualify for the program.

How to Check Eligibility?

You’ll need to:

  • Enter your Pixel 7a’s IMEI number on Google’s registration page.
  • Get your phone physically inspected.

The program was announced quietly on April 23, 2025, and doesn’t extend your device’s original warranty. It’s also only open to individuals and not businesses or resellers.

Meanwhile, there has reportedly been a mixed response from users on Reddit and X. Some are frustrated about the problem, others are glad Google is stepping in. With the new Pixel 9a now on sale for $499, Google’s Pixel line still remains popular, but this battery issue reminds users of the occasional downside.
