Asus Rog Phone 5 Review: Brilliant choice for gamers!

0

There is no doubt that when it comes to gaming phones ASUS is an ultimate title-holder, and its recent launch ASUS Rog Phone 5 is undoubtedly a beast. It packs all the latest and greatest features and hardware. The ASUS Rog Series has been a gaming-centric smartphone series, but there are some features that are not a complete nightmare to use outside the gaming area.

The Rog 5 comes with stable everyday use features with some killer specifications that can make this smartphone adjusted like a gaming PC. This is definitely a smartphone for gamers, but it also lacks some famous features along with some rough edges.

It might be the perfect phone for some but it is indeed a tough sell with the asking price of Rs 50,000.

To give you a comprehensive idea about how perfect the phone is, we reviewed the ASUS Rog Phone 5. Check out the detailed review of the smartphone here!

Build and Design:

Let us look at the design and the build of the smartphone first. The ASUS Rog Phone 5 is the fourth-generation gaming phone, and if we talk about the looks of the smartphone then not much is changed. No major redesigning has taken place, perhaps the only major change this year is that there are three different ROG phones instead of one.

The phone gives away a typical ‘80s punk vibe’ with some gaming aesthetic looks, especially because of the RGB logo lightning. The design is much less aggressively ‘gamer’ than the previous ROG Phones — it’s just interesting enough to stand out without being too flashy. The geometric cuts on the camera, paired with the dot-matrix at the bottom with the LED ROG logo, all of this adds up to contribute to its stylish standout in a good way.

It also attracts fingerprint smudges but is quite easy to clean as well. The volume buttons are a bit too high up the right edge to be comfortable to access, and while the narrow width ensures that gripping the phone is not too clumsy, the height of it simply takes away all the ergonomics. The gentle curve of the back panel also makes the usage very easy, but you also have to get used to the unorthodox charging port placements, you don’t mind it after a while.

The ROG 5 is a large phone with a 6.78-inch display. This 1080p OLED display looks sharp enough, and the colors are even at all brightness levels, with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz, and you can lock the device at this rate for smoother animations. A high refresh also makes the phone UI feel much more responsive.

Another good factor about the phone is the speakers, the phone comes with dual front-facing speakers and includes a DAC that supports hi-res audio, and there’s some fancy software built-in that can tune the sound of the front-facing speakers to ensure they provide the best output possible. The ROG 5 sounds excellent no matter how you’re listening.

Battery:

The Asus Rog Phone 5 comes with a 6,000mAh battery, which is good enough to be reliable at all times. On everyday, average usage, the device actually delivers fairly good battery life. If you’re not an extensive user you can stretch it up to two days.

For hardcore gaming, a full 100 percent charge cycle lasted around 7 hours of screen-on gaming time. That is pretty impressive, even though be very careful about soaring processor temperatures that can marginally throttle peak performance. This, however, kicks in after over one hour of an intensive game such as Call of Duty: Mobile, with all graphics, turned to max.

Performance:

Just like previous Asus Rog Phones, this one is also the gaming beast that will give an amazing experience. Asus is again offering two UI choices when setting up your device. There’s a classic theme that’s akin to stock Android, and then there’s the Default theme, which offers a gaming aesthetic.

In terms of usage, it takes a while to get used to the settings and everything but once you get your hands on it is smooth as butter. If you use the phone extensively the device also plugged into an optional cooling fan even with the controller snapped on, which certainly makes it look at work unlike any other phone out there. This, though, is a very niche area of application for the phone, which you will find useful only if you are a professional esports player who can make use of this setup.

The side-mounted USB-C port further helps its case, and the wide range of LEDs – which you can configure for multiple different flashing and color styles, add to its aesthetic as well. Until such long hours of gameplay is achieved, all of this will remain an aesthetic addition for you and nothing more in terms of the overall performance factor.

The overall performance of the phone is quite impressive and it will not disappoint you in any way.

Camera:

The smartphone comes with a 64-megapixel triple rear camera setup, which is enough for you to take good landscapes in daylight. However, the focus is clearly not on the camera here, which is also pretty much what you’d expect from a phone that caters so specifically to gamers. The 13-megapixel ultra-wide unit adds to the versatility, while the 5-megapixel macro unit feels more of a marketing suggestion than a willful one.

Although this setup does well in terms of detailed photography, the ultra-wide camera also produces acceptable results in terms of details, and the overall color levels are also well balanced and not too saturated or bleak.

Impressively, the Asus ROG Phone 5 does quite well in terms of videography, thanks to its ability to record 4K videos at 60fps. All of this sums up the ROG Phone 5 camera as a more than usable one, but that’s what it is – a camera that you won’t mind using if you have it, but won’t go chasing for the memorable shots that it could take.

Verdict:

The Asus ROG Phone 5 is an undeniably good smartphone. It is perfect for any gamer and fair in terms of everyday usage. The performance is excellent along with a good display, usable camera, and ok battery life. If we talk about the software it has plenty of gaming optimizations to make it good enough for enthusiast gamers.

However, unfortunately, the Asus ROG Phone 5 is not your ideal everyday phone. As a non-gaming user, you won’t ever make the most of the features that it offers, and it is simply too big to suit single-handed usage.

But it is totally recommended to all the gamers around. The series starting from Rs 50,000. So choose wisely!

“After the pandemic, there is a feel-good factor for Indian manufacturing brands” – Avneet Singh Marwah, CEO, SPPL

“Nobody was prepared for the lockdown. Zero sales of non-essential items deeply impacted the industry-leading to a loss of Rs 10,000 crore”

The Covid-19 pandemic changed the way companies do business, their ways to reach to masses, and plans of expansions both evolved drastically. SPPL the brand that got Kodak TVs in India channeling their nostalgic factor is one of the companies that emerged out of the pandemic.

In a recent interview with Pahi Mehra from MyMobile, Avneet Singh Marwah Director and CEO of Super Plastronics, shared the journey of the company through the pandemic, what changed and impacted the TV industry, and their plans and expectations post Covid-19.

According to you how has the Coronavirus pandemic impacted the Indian TV market?

Nobody was prepared for the lockdown. Zero sales of non-essential items deeply impacted the industry-leading to a loss of Rs 10,000 crore in the consumer electronics space, leading to the waste of two million TV sets. Subsequently, as the economy gradually began to open, we saw a huge spike in online sales starting from Unlock 1. In our business, nothing has changed except everyone in the factory however, everyone has to mandatorily wear masks and gloves to carry out the production. Operating with new norms is a big change.

How has the past year been amidst Covid-19?

We saw that people have started shifting to OTT apps, and a big TV screen enhanced the experience of watching content as compared to smaller screens like laptops, phones, etc. We saw an increase in the rating of viewership in India, which broke all the records. The demand for smart TVs grew, despite malls and shopping complexes being closed, eCommerce played an important role and offered huge discounts that accelerated the sales. Consumers’ inclination towards Made in India products further fuelled this demand and there was a lot of pent-up demand since the lockdown period. We were the first TV manufacturing plant to open after the lockdown and had a ready inventory to meet this demand and continued to serve over 15000 pin codes in India.

What are your expectations post Covid-19?

There was a huge pent-up demand after the lockdown because good quality screens were in demand as most of the communication and information was shared through smartphones, tablets, laptops, tv, etc. From work from home to online classes or watching favorite content, viewership on-screen had increased. So we saw a huge spike for 2 Quarters back to back. However, during this demand, the price of panels increased by 350% as all the panel manufacturing plants are situated in China.  We feel if prices will continue to increase, there will be a global slowdown in the TV industry, especially for India, which is a price-sensitive market.

What are your expansion plans in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets?

After the pandemic, there is a feel-good factor for Indian manufacturing brands due to which Kodak TV received a lot of quires for offline. There was a vacuum in the market for premium affordable brands, especially after the anti-China sentiments. All thanks to our offline partner Qthree, just in few months, Kodak TV was available in more than 10,000 counter across Tier 2 and tier 3. Kodak TV will be investing hugely in offline trade, this will be the first time when both offline and online will have aggressive pricing.

What kind of distribution strategies are you working on?

Currently, we have managed to get top distributors on board, every week we are adding more than 3-4 distributors. We have got a great response from Maharashtra, Rajasthan, UP, MP, Karnataka, Kerala, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and several other cities. We will be entering the Northeast in April, and cities like Raipur, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Bhubaneswar, Goa, Gujarat, etc. are cities where we will be expanding our reach. Apart from the distribution network, Kodak TV will be available on all the leading chain stores from April.

We would like to thank all our partners for welcoming Kodak TV to the offline market.

There was nothing much announced for the electronics segment in the union budget 2021? What are your thoughts?

The government intends to boost local manufacturing by doing big announcements 1.97 in various PLI schemes in the next five years. We have urged the government to include television into the scheme, as it is part of consumer electronics.

Additionally, manufacturing infrastructure plays a vital role and by June 2021 DFC will be ready. This will be a game-changer for the supply chain. This will help India to be competitive on a global stage. For metals, the government must consider exempting customs duty on panels as there is a price hike of 350% for the raw material.

You recently announced an investment of 500cr in your new Hapur plant, how is that faring up?

In 2020, we focused on expanding our manufacturing capacity and market presence with an investment of Rs 500 crores. Now, we will be expanding our IoT investment so we can continue to give competition to phone brands that are entering the TV manufacturing industry. With the new pipeline, we are confident that we can capture more than 10% of the market share by end of 2021.

What are your expectations this year in terms of turnover and market share?

This year, our turnover is expected to be 800cr with a market share of 6%.

What are your plans for the year 2021? Any new product lineup?

We are investing Rs 500 crore in the next three years to set up a fully Automated TV manufacturing plant in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh. With this, Kodak TV India aims to be one of the first Indian companies to make such a huge investment towards TV manufacturing in India and this will further strengthen its position as one of the leading manufacturers in the affordable smart television segment. We are planning to produce one million TV sets annually, and the new facility will be fully automated, AI-enabled manufacturing lines to facilitate near-contactless production.

Regarding other infrastructure in the next two years, we ought to have 1000 service centers with 70 warehouses across India. Our goal is to give installation and service under 24 hours in 15000 pin codes in the next 2 years. Kodak TV has a market share of 5% in India, we want to expand that to 8%, in the next two years.

Is your company looking beyond TVs?

If there is anything apart from television, we will keep you posted.

Facebook is testing a video speed-dating app called the ‘Sparked’

0

Social media giant, Facebook, is testing a video speed-dating app called Sparked. The app, which requires a Facebook profile to create an account, is developed by the company’s NPE Team, Facebook’s in-house group that works on experimental apps.

According to some media reports, this dating app will be different from others, the Facebook Sparked does not have public profiles, swiping, or DMs, and that it’s free to use. The app will seemingly cycle people through speed video dates that last four minutes and up to 10 minutes maximum.

After that point, Sparked suggests they can exchange contact information and stay in touch through Instagram, iMessage, or email.

This would be the second dating product from Facebook. Facebook Dating, which operates out of the main Facebook app, launched in the US in 2019 and has since rolled out to various countries, including, most recently, the UK. It operates similarly to most dating apps in that people can view a public profile of a potential match and then send a like to possibly receive one back and start a conversation. The NPE team has launched many apps, none of which have particularly taken off, so it’s unclear how committed Facebook will be to Sparked.

There is no news by when this video dating app will arrive in India.

Hacker sells 827 million LinkedIn profile data at the price of $7000: Report

0

Social networking site, LinkedIn, recently made headlines when the personal information of 500 profiles was put up on sale on a hacker forum.

According to some media reports, a hacker was found selling 500 million LinkedIn user profiles on hacker forums and provided 2 million data samples at a price of about $2. One of the user of this forum revealed that he intends to sell these 500 million pieces of information for thousands of dollars.

But in fact, there may be more information circulating on similar forums. Another user of the aforementioned hacker forum asked for the sale of 827 million LinkedIn user profiles at a price of $7,000, claiming that there are more than 500 million items. However, the number of these materials has exceeded the scale of LinkedIn users (nearly 740 million people). So that there should be duplicate or outdated materials.

As per the report, the hacker packaged the data into 7 groups. In addition to the 500 million user data that should be the same as the previous hacker, there were other data packages labeled as global users and US users, totaling 327 million. However, these materials are not sold separately, but together in groups.
