Redmi is all set to launch its first gaming smartphone powered by Dimensity 1200

0

The Chinese smartphone brand, Redmi, has come a long way since it moved from being just a line of smartphones to being a subsidiary of Xiaomi. Its product portfolio has expanded to include more products such as TVs and computers but smartphones are still the heart of the company.

Now, it has been reported that the first Redmi gaming smartphone is on the way and it will be powered by MediaTek’s new Dimensity 1200 chipset.

According to some media reports, a Weibo post by a Chinese leaker, Dimensity 1200 processor would power the first Redmi gaming smartphone.

Redmi’s General Manager, Lu Weibing, has also confirmed that it will indeed launch its first gaming flagship smartphone this year. He also revealed that the Dimensity 1200 will make its world debut in a Redmi phone, most likely the Redmi K40 series which is expected to launch soon. This means we should have two Redmi phones powered by the Dimensity 1200.

There is a lot we do not yet know about the Redmi gaming smartphone. For instance, will it be the first of a new series or will it launch under an existing series? We also do not know what the other specs are and what features it will have that give it an advantage over the other gaming smartphones in the market. We also do not know how soon it will launch.

Nevertheless, we expect the Redmi gaming smartphone to have a high refresh rate, though it might be an LCD and not an AMOLED display. We also expect a big battery capacity, super-fast charging, and possibly, extra features such as shoulder buttons.

The Dimensity 1200 is a 6nm chipset with four Cortex-A78 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores. It has a prime Cortex-A78 core that is clocked at 3.0GHz. It also has a Mali-G77 MC9 GPU which should be able to handle any game you throw at it but not as well as the Mali-G78 that is found in the Exynos 1080, Exynos 2100, and Kirin 9000/9000E chipsets.

0

As the world recovers from the socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis, India is emerging strong in the field of technology with a significant rise in tech investments. Professional recruitment services firm Michael Page India today launched the ‘Talent Trends 2021 Report’, with a focus on the technology and e-commerce sector, signalling a stable recovery in 2021 with recruitment across industries.

Due to breakneck automation and digital transformation across sectors and the ensuing requirement of backend support, the tech industry will continue to lead hiring activities in 2021.

In 2021, companies are looking to take advantage of the availability of Indian techies looking to return to India due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Varsha Barooah, Director of Michael Page India, says, “With the steady recovery of India’s economy and market, most tech companies are anticipated to increase headcount in 2021. We hope tech hiring will bring a degree of stability and serve as a catalyst for overall business recovery.”

According to the study, over 71% hiring managers felt that skills and experience are the most important criteria for hiring in the industry. Companies now are also open to considering talent remotely available. Jobs roles such as application architect backend engineer and chief technology officer will be in most demand. Additionally with the increase in the use of AR and mixed reality (MR) by e-commerce platforms and virtual gaming, we anticipate more professionals needed in this space and skills such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) will gain more importance in 2021.

With the overall demand levels for tech roles improving to almost pre-COVID levels, employers will continue to compete for high potential professionals. Entrepreneurs with a stellar professional record who have been forced to close down their ventures during the pandemic, will also be back in the talent pool and available for key positions in growth start-ups.

Companies are also aware of the need to attract and retain talent in a competitive landscape. With mental health and wellbeing emerging as an important consideration when looking for a job in 2021, 47 % of the technology companies that participated in the study, are focussing on ‘remote/flexible work arrangements ‘as a key talent attraction strategy. Subsequently, the availability of growth opportunities features as an important factor of consideration for technology professionals when accepting a job offer in 2021.

In addition to recruitment insights and industry analysis on the technology market, the report also shares new insights across the Indian and Asia Pacific market for other sectors such as healthcare, BFSI and real estate supported by insights on digital readiness, organizational structure, flexible working, leadership, performance management as well as diversity and inclusion.

RoDTEP of minimum 1.5% critical to India’s Electronics Exports: ICEA Study

0

India’s electronics association ICEA, in collaboration with IKDHVAJ Advisers LLP, released a detailed report on RoDTEP for the electronics sector today.  ICEA is proposing a base rate for RoDTEP of at least 1.5% in the electronics category, based on the minimum assumption of logistics and power costs in manufacturing. Beyond this, individual products with high export potential attract a higher RoDTEP rate, based on the level of domestic value addition.

Driven by the need to boost electronics manufacturing, attract GVCs and large scale export-linked FDI, the electronics sector has become a central focus of government’s manufacturing policy. However, India suffers several disabilities vis-à-vis competing destinations such as China, Vietnam and Thailand, which make India’s exports uncompetitive. RoDTEP, which replaces the MEIS Scheme, is key to ensuring that Indian electronics exports regain the competitive edge. ICEA aims to make electronics India’s top export by 2025.

Globally, electronics is a US$2 trillion industry, dominated by exports from China, Vietnam, Taiwan and Japan etc. Electronics is amongst the largest traded commodities after oil. It provides India with a tremendous opportunity to become a global leader in exports. RoDTEP is critical since the government is targeting US$1 trillion in exports by 2025 as part of the US$5 trillion GDP objective. No country has reached the US$5 trillion mark without exports contributing at least 18-20%.  India is no different.

The Electronics RoDTEP Report represents an intensive study across six months for various products. It prioritizes electronics items based on current exports or future potential exports. Till recently, over 370 electronic items received MEIS between 2-4%.

Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman ICEA said, “RoDTEP is critical to address India’s deep disabilities vis-à-vis its competitors for boosting electronics manufacturing and making it India’s number 1 export by 2025. This needs to be an ongoing exercise to address the adverse impact on India’s competitiveness, of high taxes which remain unremitted.  An early finalisation of RoDTEP base rate and rates of priority products needs to be our immediate focus.”

The report also highlights the tremendous growth in electronics manufacturing and exports over the last three years. Electronics, which is India’s 9th largest exports, has shown the highest response (85% increase) to export stimulus between 2017-2020, from amongst the top 15 exports from India. The report further shows that several countries are already allowing remission of indirect taxes, levies and duties that are allowed under WTO. It identifies and unbundles indirect taxes for the purposes of remission. The rates estimated in the report identify the unremitted duties/taxes/levies at the Central, State and local level, borne by exported electronics products, including prior stage cumulative indirect taxes on goods and services used in the production of such products.

Based on credible inputs from the industry, the big ticket items considered for this study of RoDTEP in Electronics, are indirect taxes on transport and power, and embedded taxes on inputs. The IKDHWAJ team which conducted the study, was led by Dr. Jayant Dasgupta, former Indian Ambassador to the WTO,  Dr. Harsha Vardhana Singh, Former DDG, WTO & former Economic Advisor and Secretary TRAI, and Dr. Veena Jha, Economist and former Coordinator of UNCTAD’s India program who has worked with several multilaterals such as EU, WHO and ILO etc.

Airtel launches ‘Airtel Safe Pay’ – India’s safest way to pay digitally

0

To protect Airtel customers from the growing incidents of online payment frauds, Airtel Payments Bank today launched ‘Airtel Safe Pay’ – India’s safest mode for making digital payments.

With ‘Airtel Safe Pay’, Airtel customers making UPI or Netbanking based payments through Airtel Payments Bank, no longer have to worry about money leaving their accounts without their explicit consent.

An India-First innovation, ‘Airtel Safe Pay’ leverages Airtel’s ‘telco exclusive’ strength of network intelligence to provide an additional layer of payment validation compared to the industry norm of two-factor authentication. This offers the highest level of protection from potential frauds such as phishing, stolen credentials or passwords, and even phone cloning that catches customers unaware.

Anubrata Biswas, MD & CEO, Airtel Payments Bank says, “As digital payments become the norm, especially in the post-pandemic world, we also have to solve for the challenge of frauds that are growing rapidly. We are happy to leverage Airtel’s core telco strengths to bring to market this unique capability that ensures that our customers have full control over their transactions. This sets a new benchmark in the Indian digital payments space by making security paramount.”

Using ‘Airtel Safe Pay’, Airtel Payments Bank customers can make secure digital payments across millions of merchants, online retailers and utilities, and even send money. Customers can open an Airtel Payments Bank account within few minutes with just a video call from the Airtel Thanks app and enjoy a range of benefits while they make fully secure digital payments.

Adarsh Nair, Chief Product Officer, Bharti Airtel said, “Airtel Safe Pay is yet another innovation where our secure network and world-class digital platforms combine to solve a unique market problem. At Airtel, we are taking the lead in offering the most secure digital payments platforms to our users and making sure that the customer is always in control without a worry about rogue transactions.”

The 2021 is going to be the “Year of digital desktop transformation”

0

‘Cloud’ is going to be the catchword in 2021 as digital transformation is happening across the globe. The pandemic has also put the thrust on the cloud as the quicker adoption means higher the value of relevance. Dr. Christopher Richard, MD & Chief Cloud Architect, G7 CR Technologies India Pvt Ltd has elaborated on this unique and diverse topic in dialogue with My Mobile.

The case for digital transformation has never been more urgent. How do you see the pandemic giving a thrust to India in being one of the leading cloud hubs?

Digital transformation, tech intensity, open-mindedness to tech adaption, and the changes that tech addition can bring are now more urgent than ever before. These of course are all global sentiments and give a thrust to India, coz we have the world’s biggest market for the cloud with us on the way from being a developing nation to a developed nation. With the density of people and the purchasing power, we continue to see an increase in demand and being one of the world’s largest in number of Startups, SMBs and consumers. We have everything to drive cloud consumption to the skies. Now the pandemic has helped in this thrust by nudging the snail CEOs and CTOs to drive the adaption of tech quicker and they have realized the relevance of cloud in their technology road map.

To accelerate business innovation, Startups, SMBs and SMEs plan to migrate the majority of their internal IT workloads to the public cloud. What are your plans to tap the growing market of Cloud Services in India and neighboring countries?

Startups, SMBs and SMEs have always been close to our hearts and business with them has been an emotional need more than the bottom line or top line driven need. We plan to further intensify our relationship with them by ensuring we create a whole package of value surrounding technology that creates a partnership with them in the true sense of helping them grow as we grow. Our Digital transformation walls are built around a program called CPR (Capital, People and Revenue) and the program has dedicated focus to be the guiding force to help the Startups, SMBs and SMEs capitalize, skill and motivate their people and help with GTM across the globe to drive their revenues. We have also setup the Drona Technology center to drive skill enablement for all the resources of all who partner with us in their digital transformation journey along with soon to be launched CPL (Cloud players league) which will be similar to the IPL, but involve players from the companies that partner with us. We are in the process of setting up a dedicated cricket stadium in Bangalore for this purpose. We will launch other programs that help motivate and engage the resources of the entire SMB, SME, and startup community. We will be driving marketing, PR, and lead generation activities for the community across the globe along with our spread, and we now cover the whole of MEA as a market opportunity. In addition to all of this, we will also act as investment advisors and bring investment support to them from partner organizations.

Tell us how the cloud played a major role during the pandemic and how it helped companies operate from home. Do you see this growth continue even in 2021?

I will definitely say that the pandemic woke the whole business IT leadership to a realization that, while we may talk about digital transformation for our server infrastructure, we made a huge mistake in ignoring our desktops in this vision. Most of our opportunities during the pandemic to help people work from home, has been to convert the traditional physical desktop\laptop into VDI hosted on the cloud. We have personally moved, stabilized, and have in use over 20000+ desktops in the past 6 months, and we see this growing further in 2021. If we used a Chinese calendar, I would like to declare 2021 as going to be the “Year of the digital desktop transformation.”

While the business apps that allow you have video meets and greets and drive some amount of business automation and digital visibility, moving your whole desktop to the cloud for a few dollars and moving company strategy to BYOD (bring your own device) will be what further grows the cloud and drives consumption.

The onset of the covid-19 pandemic was the starting point of the Cloud 2.0 era. How do you see this as an opportunity to help the cloud computing Industry touching new heights in the years to come?

Cloud computing is here to stay and though it has only been growing, the COVID-19 pandemic has fastened this growth and it will continue to grow and reach greater heights in years to come, but yes, the cloud OEMs that will continue to grow in the long run will be the ones that learn that this is the time to consolidate and build more strong ties with the SMBs, SMEs and startups. They are after all your future enterprises.  The Cloud OEMs who are not self-centered toward the SMB, SME and startup community during these times and instead use this as an opportunity to increase prices and strengthen bottom lines will see a drop in the curve once the industry normalizes and will eventually lose to compete.

How cloud adoption can help give a push to a new revenue stream for the telecom sector?

The telecom industry for whatever reason is not the leader in the cloud market, and they have only themselves to blame for this. They had the connectivity control, they had the customer base, all they needed was a data center and platform. But who can tell a set of people who sold SIMs and connections and were driven by customer count to look around for other opportunities and business lines. But now since they missed the bus when it was in their backyard, their only option now is to use the strength of their customer reach and connectivity control and partner with existing cloud OEMs to create another revenue opportunity, and today we do see such partnerships happening and will become a high driver of revenue for both parties involved.

How do you think India’s Cloud market will manage the supply chain in 2021?

With the need for contactless and with the need of visibility, automation of the supply chain is going to be in huge demand. The ISVs have lived up and already have a stack of products ready to suit today’s demands in supply chain automation. With on-prem data centers not even in the stream of thoughts, the cloud will benefit from this demand. It is 700% faster and 300% lower in cost to deploy a supply chain solution on the cloud than on your own infrastructure. So, this turns out to be a no brainer, it’s just simple math.
