Five Reasons to Use a Wearable Health Tracker

0

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) – medical devices and applications that are connected to the healthcare IT systems are expected to grow at a significantly higher rate, particularly between 2018-2023. Wearable health trackers, such as the smartwatches – elements of IoMT, are increasingly becoming mainstream products. Capable of tracking our health data, these devices can help us better understand our overall health and fitness.

According to a wearable tracker report published by IDC, the Indian wearables market saw a massive surge by 144.3%, as compared to 2019, making India the only country in the top three that saw a three-digit growth in 2020. In fact, over the next few years, it is the healthcare industry that is expected to drive the entire wearable devices and technology market – thanks to the availability of cutting-edge products for health and fitness.

Now as the future of health-tracking wearables looks brighter than ever before especially in the wake of catastrophic COVID-19 pandemic, we asked five impact creators to share why a health-tracking wearable is worth considering:

They track our exercise, breathing, heart rate and more

“Wearables are helping us monitor our exercise, our breathing and our heart rates with the use of sensors embedded in their chips – software algorithms working on the software layer.

There are numerous techniques from which we are able to achieve this monitoring such as photoplethysmography for blood pressure to share breathing and heart rates, accelerometer sensing for movement, etc. More often, some technologies which come under the application of wearables are edge computing, IoT and cloud computing.” -Ramneek Kalra, IEEE Member

We can self-monitor our exercise

“Fitness has gained significant mindshare, thanks to the pandemic. At the same time, social-distancing protocols have restricted access to gyms and other similar community sports centers. In these circumstances, wearables are a boon to help keep track of one’s activity.

Monitoring vital signs and changes as one exercises and providing real-time feedback would help one to keep within safe bounds of stress. For people with lifestyle, chronic or other diseases, exercises could be prescribed with greater confidence that reliable feedback mechanisms would help prevent harm.” -Aiyappan Pillai, Senior IEEE Member

They provide a more complete view of our health

“Activity tracking helps in creating awareness among people the importance of balance in exercise, sleep and eating habits. But the wearables are not only for the healthy people, they are more importantly used for people who have some ailments like heart problems and obesity. Athletes may also get into injuries while training where the wearables can help them to be monitored through workout logs and other self-tracking methods.

The devices with self-tracking features help health-aware individuals monitor their own fitness levels through apps and messages, which the wearer can view without even bothering to take the device out of their pockets. The most important effect of these wearables is that a complete view of one’s health can be obtained all in one place thus reducing time and cost.” -Ramalatha Marimuthu, IEEE Senior Member

Doctors can use the data to help diagnose

“Even though the data collected by these wearables are very personal information associated with an individual, data protection and privacy standards prevail. But with proper consent, this data can be shared by an individual with their doctors which in turn are vital information for a patient’s diagnosis.

There was news where someone used a smartwatch, and after some months of data trends, helped the doctors diagnose a serious heart condition and immediately acted on it. It saved someone’s life.” -Sukanya Mandal, Senior IEEE Member

The technology is improving

“Today we see wearables’ total addressable market around 33 billion USD, and it is expected to grow beyond 15% year-over-year. The future is promising for wearables, as it bundles the technology to change the social behaviour and acceptance of transformative use-cases.

Apart from the forms of wearables that are available today such as smartwatches, smart badges, smart glasses, smart bracelets and smart head-mounted gadgets, I see the emergence of exoskeleton suits for lifting heavy objects and prosthetics through 3D printing for creating human organs will be used in manufacturing and healthcare industries to promote the same.” -Bala Prasad Peddigari, Senior IEEE Member

Truecaller does its bit, comes up with Covid Hospital Directory in India

0

Caller ID and telephone search engine Truecaller today launched a Covid Hospital Directory for users in India. The directory is built right into the app and can be accessed from either the menu or the dialer.

The directory includes telephone numbers and addresses of Covid designated hospitals from multiple states across the country, sourced from official government databases, Truecaller said in a statement.

A search button helps you quickly find the information you need; however, it does not assure hospital bed availability, it added.

“We wanted to quickly introduce a simple directory of important numbers for Covid-related services. We have started with this hospital list and we’re working to add more verified sources soon,” said Rishit Jhunjhunwala, MD India, Truecaller.

“This is one among the many ways we’re helping with Covid relief efforts. We offer the support of the entire organisation and the Truecaller platform, for anyone that we can help,” he added.

“COVID-19 pandemic has added data concerns in India”

0

Even though remote-working has become an essential part of the new normal, it has increased the risk of security breaches and threats which can lead to loss of data, breaches of privacy, to name a few. Filip Cotfas, Sales and Business Development Manager (India and SAARC) at CoSoSys, shares with Ramesh Kumar Raja that how businesses should take data privacy seriously and step up their cybersecurity measures. Cotfas also underlines the fact that India is becoming a mature market when it comes to Data Loss Prevention. Excerpts:

How do you look at the current situation of data security in India, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak forcing people to work remotely?

The COVID-19 pandemic has added the data concerns in India. The sudden shift to the work-from-home model has raised privacy concerns and security issues in all the industries.

We proactively educate our customers and partners on the new threats and scenarios that appeared due to COVID and advise them on mitigating the risks.

With remote work becoming the new norm, how vulnerable are businesses to data breaches?

Remote work emphasized the key challenges being faced related to data protection and compliance with regulations. In the past few months, the number of cyber-attacks and data breaches has increased. India has recorded the highest number of data breaches along with the US and the Middle East.

All businesses need to take data privacy seriously and step up their cybersecurity measures. They really need to start rethinking the way they look at security and make the necessary changes to overcome the challenges of WFH.

What are the most common data threats nowadays as they keep changing/ evolving with time or day-to-day lifestyle trends?

The most common threats that have been increasing in the past year are insider threats. The human factor is often the most difficult to control and predict when it comes to data security and protection.

The amount of digital data is growing considerably together with human interactions with the data. The potential risks of insider threats are numerous, including financial fraud, data corruption, theft of valuable information, and installing malware, which can lead to data breaches.

The new work-from-home policy can mean no live supervision and little to no training for handling new security risks. Employees can also face more distractions in their home settings, coupled with the overlying stress of the pandemic and regular work pressure.

What one should do to keep data breaches at bay, as the situation is only going to worsen in the coming times, giving more room to cybercrimes?

Businesses should make sure all exit points are secured, and that the users are educated on data security threats. It’s always better to prevent than to fix a problem.

“One of the data security trends that will dominate 2021 is the proactive approach, which focuses on preventing attacks rather than reacting after an attack. Another trend is accelerating and reviewing security and compliance. Data breaches keep increasing, especially since the WFH scenario. Many companies strive to achieve compliance with employees working from home while addressing new vulnerabilities”

India still is new to DLP, how is CoSoSys leveraging this trend? What are the DLP solutions that you offer and what will be your future offerings?

India is becoming a mature market when it comes to DLP. The awareness for Data Loss Prevention and data security has increased a lot in the past year. We are looking to provide our DLP solution with advanced features and functionalities that ensure security, flexibility, and compliance for larger companies.

Can you please tell us in short about the services you provide and what are the technicalities involved?

Endpoint Protector by CoSoSys is an advanced enterprise-grade DLP solution for Windows, macOS, and Linux computers, Thin Clients, and Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) platforms.

The solution efficiently stops unintentional data leaks, protects from malicious data theft, and offers seamless control of portable storage devices.

Are governments and their public-dealing institutions doing enough to protect citizens’ confidential data?

Governments are aware and taking precautions but the pandemic and WFH policy has disrupted the normal way of work. Companies now need to rethink their security strategy to adapt to the new environment and new threats.

Is there a dire need to educate businesses about DLP? How has been the acceptance?

Education is a non-ending process and companies need to keep up with the technological changes. Also, businesses need to counsel employees and educate them on how to secure sensitive and confidential data. There is no doubt that COVID-19 has fast changed the business security landscape of organizations worldwide.

What are the areas of growth for CoSoSys in the country and what is your roadmap for the same?

CoSoSys is a leading provider of data security solutions in India and its market plays an important role to us. We have strengthened our Channel Partner Program here, through which we’ve tried to establish an understanding of why the Data Loss Prevention solutions are business-relevant and should be in priority.

We are also looking to develop the product more for India, offering more features like predefined policies for local compliance.

Through the help of our Channel Partners, we are covering Tier II and Tier III as well, and we are also focusing on Awareness and Educational content focused on the Tier II and III cities, with the help of local media.

How does your solution distinguish from the competition?

We provide Data Loss Prevention not just for Windows, but also for macOS and Linux computers, Thin Clients, and DaaS platforms. We are pioneers in the implementation of DLP for macOS and Linux, covering Mac OS X 10.4+ and several Linux distributions – Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, RedHat, and more.

Our cross-platform coverage extends to all Endpoint Protector modules, including USB Enforced Encryption, enabling seamless management of all endpoints regardless of their operating system, all from a single dashboard.

Can you please tell us about the data security trends that will dominate the industry in 2021?

One of the data security trends that will dominate 2021 is the proactive approach, which focuses on preventing attacks rather than reacting after an attack.

Another trend is accelerating and reviewing security and compliance. Data breaches keep increasing, especially since the WFH scenario. Many companies strive to achieve compliance with employees working from home while addressing new vulnerabilities.

Telegram rolls out new features, adds Payments 2.0, Voice Chat scheduling and more

0

Popular messaging platform Telegram has come up with a new update which brings Payments 2.0 for all Telegram chats, Scheduling and Mini Profiles for Voice Chats, new Telegram apps for your browser and more. The new update also brings an auto-delete timer for messages in any chat, as well as new flexible invite links and faster access to your chats.

In a blog post, the company said, “We first added support for payments in 2017. Payment bots allowed users to securely pay for goods and services without leaving the app – anything from ordering a pizza to hailing a taxi, to replacing winter tires when you’re tired of winter.” “Merchants can natively accept credit card payments in any chat, relying on 8 integrated third-party payment providers such as Stripe,” it added.

As per the update (Payments 2.0), buyers can add a tip whenever they purchase to show some extra love to their favourite artists, stores, or delivery drivers. Payments can now be made from any app – including desktop apps. This is a free and privacy-conscious platform – Telegram takes no commission and stores no payment information, it said.

Any merchant can start using the Payments API without getting additional approvals from Telegram. Developers interested in integrating payments can find all the details in the Payments Manual.

Talking about the Voice Chats 2.0, it gives users the option to catch up with a few friends or tune in to massive broadcasts with millions of listeners. Admins of groups and channels can now schedule a Voice Chat for a particular date and time instead of creating one right away. This gives community members time to let their friends know and get the popcorn ready.

Besides, the users will see a colourful countdown at the top of the chat. Those too busy to watch the countdown can opt to receive a notification when the voice chat starts. The users can also change their profile picture and edit bios without leaving the chat.

Telegram also said that they are adding two new, fully-featured web apps – both supporting animated stickers, dark mode, chat folders and more. With the new web versions, you can get instant access to your chats on any device desktop or mobile, the company said. Photos and videos can now be expanded directly from the chat – simply pinch to zoom in right away, without tapping to open the media viewer, it added.

200MP camera phone likely from the house of Xiaomi

0

With camera-centric phones becoming the order of the day, Chinese tech major Xiaomi is reportedly planning to take this trend a notch higher with a smartphone having a 200MP camera sensor. 108MP is currently the largest camera sensor that a smartphone offers.

If the reports are to be believed, the sensor will come from Samsung and is expected to have 0.64um unit pixel, but far less than the 1.4Im unit pixel area of aaISOCELL GN2.

A well-known leakster had recently revealed that the South Korean tech major Samsung is planning to launch a new innovative sensor this year under the company’s ISOCELL that will have a 200MP image sensor. According to reports, Samsung has also hinted that it is developing a 200MP image sensor as the successor of the 108MP sensor found in the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Although it’s not yet confirmed, Samsung is likely to use the new 200MP sensor on the upcoming Galaxy S22 series flagship smartphones.
