  • Apple is considering integrating RCS messaging in India via Google’s partnerships with Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio.
  • Bharti Airtel hesitates to adopt RCS due to spam concerns seeking the use of proprietary spam detection tools and regulatory oversight.
  • RCS offers features like typing indicators, read receipts, Wi-Fi messaging and HD media sharing.

Apple is reportedly in talks with Google to bring Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging support to India. According to The Economic Times, this partnership could allow Apple’s iMessage to work with RCS protocols, improving the way iPhone and Android users communicate.

Apple has already rolled out peer-to-peer (P2P) RCS messaging in eight countries, including the US, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, the UK, Belgium and China.

In these regions (except China), Apple’s iMessage relies on Google’s backend servers, which are part of local carrier networks. The report suggests Apple might follow the same approach in India, integrating RCS through Google’s partnerships with Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio.

However, Bharti Airtel is holding back. The telecom giant has concerns about spam and does not want to integrate RCS with Google unless it can use its proprietary spam detection tools.

An Airtel executive told The Economic Times, “Until Google allows Airtel to identify spam messages using its proprietary tool, RCS will not be onboarded… since Google RCS is an OTT (over-the-top) service, it bypasses the Airtel intelligent solution much as all OTT services do.”

Airtel has also asked telecom regulators to bring OTT messaging apps under anti-spam regulations.

What Is RCS Messaging?

Rich Communication Services (RCS) is an upgraded messaging standard developed by the GSM Association (GSMA). Unlike traditional messaging services such as SMS and MMS, RCS works over the Internet and offers a richer messaging experience.

Key Features of RCS include typing indicators to see when someone is typing, read receipts to know when your message has been read, Wi-Fi & mobile data messaging with no SMS charges and High-resolution media sharing for sending HD images, videos and files.

If Apple adopts RCS in India, it could bridge the gap between iPhone and Android messaging, making cross-platform chats smoother and more seamless.

FAQs

Q1. What is Apple reportedly planning with RCS messaging in India?

Answer. Apple is in talks with Google to integrate RCS messaging in India through partnerships with Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio, enhancing cross-platform communication.

Q2. Why is Bharti Airtel hesitant about adopting RCS?

Answer. Airtel has concerns about spam and wants to use its proprietary spam detection tools. It is also urging telecom regulators to include OTT messaging apps under anti-spam regulations.

Q3. What features does RCS messaging offer?

Answer. RCS provides features like typing indicators, read receipts, Wi-Fi and mobile data messaging, and high-resolution media sharing for an enriched chat experience.

The Nintendo Switch has been a massive success and its affordable $299 launch price is often credited as one of the major reasons for the success. Compared to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, it is one of the more reasonably priced gaming consoles. However, it seems that industry analysts think the Nintendo Switch 2 might not turn out to be that budget-friendly. Here’s what we know.

Analysts Predict a Higher Price Tag For Nintendo Switch 2

A Bloomberg report reveals that multiple industry analysts believe the Switch 2 will be more expensive than the original.

Hideki Yasuda (Toyo Securities) estimates that the new NVIDIA chip inside the Switch 2 will cost $130-$150 per unit, compared to $80 for the original Switch’s chip. Because of this, Yasuda predicts a $499 price tag for the new console.

Other analysts including Serkan Toto Yijia Zhai (UBS) and Robin Zhu (Sanford C. Bernstein) think Nintendo will aim a bit lower, predicting a $399 price point. However, they note that external factors like U.S. tariffs could push the price higher.

Nintendo Switch 2 – Possible June Launch

Aside from pricing, Robin Zhu expects Nintendo to launch the Switch 2 in June, with a first-day inventory of 6 to 8 million units. If this holds true, it could make the biggest console launch ever.

For comparison, the original Switch sold 2.7 million units in its first month. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 each sold 4.5 million units in their first month.

Moreover, Hiroshi Yamashina (Macquarie Capital) predicts that Nintendo could sell 20 million units within the console’s first year.

A Nintendo Direct is scheduled for April 2, where the company is expected to reveal more details about the Switch 2. If pricing and launch details are announced, it will finally answer one of the biggest questions fans have about the upcoming console.

Apple is set to begin AirPods production in India this April at Foxconn’s Hyderabad plant, primarily for export, according to reports from PTI and IANS. This marks a significant step in Apple’s efforts to expand its manufacturing base in India.

Apple’s Growing Supply Chain in India

Apple has already been exporting AirPods components from India to China and Vietnam since 2023. Now, the company is moving towards full-scale production, reinforcing India’s role in its global supply chain.

Speaking about Apple’s manufacturing presence in India during an earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said, “Our business needs certain economies of scale for it to make sense to manufacture in the country.”

He also confirmed that production in India serves both local and export markets.

Apple’s expansion in India goes beyond AirPods. Reports suggest that Foxconn is preparing to manufacture Beats headphones in the country as well. While current production is meant for export, there’s a possibility of local sales in the future, which could affect pricing and availability in the Indian market.

“Apple is making small quantities of the base AirPods models for exports to markets like the United States, Europe, and others from the Foxconn facility at Hyderabad,” an industry executive told ET.

India’s Growing Role in Apple’s Production

Apple’s iPhone exports from India have already reached Rs 1 lakh crore in the first ten months of FY25, setting a new record. This rapid growth highlights India’s increasing importance as a key manufacturing hub, driven by government incentives and a skilled workforce.

Apple’s move to diversify its production aligns with a broader trend of global companies reducing supply chain risks while leveraging India’s growing manufacturing capabilities.

AirPods To Add Translation Feature

In addition to manufacturing news, Apple is reportedly working on a live-translation feature for AirPods, expected to launch later this year alongside iOS 19. The feature will allow AirPods users to translate in-person conversations.

This feature comes after Apple introduced AirPods as hearing aids. The Cupertino giant is also rumoured to be developing future AirPods integrated with cameras and AI-driven features.

FAQs

Q1. When and where will Apple start AirPods production in India?

Answer. Apple will begin AirPods production in April at Foxconn’s Hyderabad plant, primarily for export.

Q2. What other manufacturing plans does Apple have in India?

Answer. Apart from AirPods, Apple is producing iPhones for export and may start manufacturing Beats headphones, indicating its growing reliance on India.

Q3. What new features are being developed for AirPods?

Answer. Apple is working on a live-translation feature for AirPods, expected with iOS 19, along with innovations like AI integration and camera-equipped models.

Apple Reportedly Working on Multiple Versions of the Next Studio Display

0

Highlights

  • Apple is working on a second-generation Studio Display for a 2026 release.
  • It could be either a prototype or a different model with new features.
  • Apple might also be developing multiple external monitors as it updates its Pro Display XDR and Studio Display lineup.
image
Latest speculation about Apple’s next studio displays reveal plans for multiple versions. (Image credit – Apple)

Apple is developing at least two new external monitors and it’s unclear whether they are separate products or simply different prototypes of the same model. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has been working on a second-generation Studio Display codenamed J427 for a 2026 release.

However, another monitor codenamed J527 has also surfaced raising questions about Apple’s plans. Here’s what we know so far.

Is J527 a Third-Gen Studio Display or Prototype?

While it might seem like Apple is already working on a third-generation Studio Display, Gurman says that may not be the case. He explains, “Now, here’s one twist. I’m told Apple is working on a second new monitor code-named J527. At this point, it seems unlikely that the device would be a subsequent generation, given the amount of time between updates and that we’re still a bit away from the J427.”

This suggests that J427 and J527 might not be separate products but rather different versions of the second-generation Studio Display that Apple is testing. Given that the first Studio Display launched over three years ago and its successor is still more than a year away, Apple may be experimenting with multiple options before finalising the design.

Is Apple Planning Multiple Studio Display Variants?

Gurman also speculates that J527 could be a different model rather than just a prototype, possibly featuring a new screen size or upgraded specifications.

He also notes that Apple’s Pro Display XDR is approaching its sixth anniversary, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Apple is working on more than one external monitor update.

For now, it remains unclear what features will set J527 apart, if it even becomes a standalone product. But with the second-generation Studio Display expected in 2026, we might get more clarity on Apple’s monitor lineup in the coming months.

FAQs

Q1. What is Apple working on regarding external monitors?

Answer. Apple is developing at least two external monitors, including the second-generation Studio Display (codenamed J427), expected to launch in 2026.

Q2. What is the Apple J527 monitor and how is it different?

Answer. The Apple monitor codenamed J527 may be a prototype or a separate model with new features, but it’s unlikely to be a third-generation Studio Display, according to recent speculation.

Q3. Could Apple release multiple external monitor variants?

Answer. Yes, Reports suggest Apple might be developing multiple monitors, possibly with varied specifications, as it updates its Pro Display XDR and Studio Display lineup.

With every passing day, we are getting more and more details about the next iPhone lineup. Recently, popular Apple leaker Sonny Dickson on X (formerly Twitter) gave their followers a sneak peek at dummy models of the iPhone 17 lineup. These models give us a good look at changes in camera designs, thickness variations and MagSafe support across all models.

Here’s what we know based on recent leaks.

MagSafe Stays On The Ultra-Thin iPhone 17 Air

The biggest takeaway from the leaded dummy model images is that all iPhone 17 models will support MagSafe. Some had speculated that the iPhone 17 Air might ditch MagSafe due to its ultra-thin design, especially after Apple removed it from the iPhone 16e. There were also rumours that MagSafe could interfere with the C1 chip.

image

However, these leaks confirm that iPhone 17 Air will keep MagSafe after all.

The iPhone 17 Air also features a slightly tweaked Dynamic Island with the front camera shifting to the left side of the pill-shaped cutout.

Since the iPhone 14 Pro, the front camera has been on the right, and that will remain the case for the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, just not the Air model.

iPhone 17 Air – Thin and Feature-Packed

One of the standout features of the iPhone 17 Air is its incredibly slim profile. Reports suggest it will be around 5.5mm thick, making it one of Apple’s thinnest iPhones ever. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro models are expected to get noticeably thicker, while the standard iPhone 17 will remain similar in size.

9to5Mac in its report states, “Last but not least, we get a good look at the thickness. iPhone 17 Air is going to be quite thin, whereas the iPhone 17 Pro models will be getting a fair bit thicker. The standard iPhone 17 looks about the same.”

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the iPhone 17 Air will include some features from the iPhone 16 Pro, like Camera Control and ProMotion. While ProMotion was expected across the lineup, Camera Control was uncertain until now.

Apple Considered Removing the USB-C Port

At one point, Apple reportedly considered making the iPhone 17 Air its first portless iPhone, relying entirely on wireless charging. However, the company ultimately scrapped the idea. European regulations likely played a role in this decision.

The iPhone 17 Air will replace the iPhone 16 Plus and is expected to launch at around $900, featuring a 6.6-inch display. However, to achieve its ultra-thin design, Apple made some trade-offs including no second speaker and only a single rear camera (unlike the dual-camera setup on the iPhone 16 Plus).

Despite its thin build, Apple is ensuring battery life doesn’t suffer. According to Gurman, Apple redesigned the display, silicon components and software to maximise efficiency. Gurman writes, “Skinnier phones require thinner batteries, and that often means fewer hours of battery life. Apple didn’t want to compromise here, so it sent engineers back to the drawing board to redesign display and silicon components, as well as software, to make the device more efficient.”

Apple’s First 5G Modem Arrives in iPhone 17 Air

The iPhone 17 Air will also introduce Apple’s first in-house 5G modem, the C1 chip. This modem first appeared in the iPhone 16e and will now power the iPhone 17 Air as well. However, this means the device won’t support mmWave 5G, though Apple still markets the iPhone 16e as offering “Superfast 5G cellular.”

Apple is gearing up to introduce several exciting messaging improvements in iOS 19, which will include support for RCS Universal Profile 3.0. This will not only bring end-to-end encryption for RCS messages but also unlock a range of other long-awaited features.

iOS 19 Upgrades to RCS 3.0

When Apple introduced RCS messaging in iOS 18, it used version 2.4, which improved texting with Android users by adding high-quality images, read receipts and more. However, it missed out on key features introduced in RCS 2.7, which launched in June 2024.

These missing features included the ability to reply and react to messages including custom reactions, editing, recalling, and deleting sent messages and using custom images (such as Genmoji) as reactions.

Since Apple implemented RCS before these updates were announced, iPhone users never got to experience these enhancements.

Now, Apple has confirmed that it will support RCS Universal Profile 3.0 in a future update. This means iPhones will finally catch up by integrating all the improvements from RCS 2.7, along with the much-awaited end-to-end encryption.

Apple hasn’t shared an exact timeline, but it’s expected to roll out sometime during the iOS 19 lifecycle.

In a statement, Apple said, “End-to-end encryption is a powerful privacy and security technology that iMessage has supported since the beginning, and now we are pleased to have helped lead a cross-industry effort to bring end-to-end encryption to the RCS Universal Profile published by the GSMA. We will add support for end-to-end encrypted RCS messages to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS in future software updates.”

A Major iOS 19 Redesign Inspired by visionOS

Alongside the messaging improvements, iOS 19 will also bring one of Apple’s biggest software redesigns in years. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple executives are “confident” users will love the changes.

Gurman writes, “Despite the risks involved in major interface changes, top Apple executives say they are confident that users will love the new look and feel. The trick is creating something that appeals both to the hundreds of millions of current users and the new customers that Apple hopes to add in the coming years.”

The update will take inspiration from visionOS, the software powering Apple’s Vision Pro headset. “The new interfaces will adopt the design principles introduced in visionOS, the software for Apple’s Vision Pro headset. That includes greater transparency and new types of windows and buttons — and that should make all Apple devices feel more consistent and familiar,” Gurman added.

Gurman says the redesign goes “well beyond a fresh coat of paint” and will fundamentally change how users interact with their devices for years to come. Apple believes these updates will make the interface “simpler to use, faster to navigate, and easier to learn.”

The redesign could also pave the way for future Apple products including foldable devices and touchscreen Macs. Moreover, Apple is working to “adapt to an era adopted by artificial intelligence assistants, rather than people continually dipping in and out of applications.”
