Future iPhones may arrive with Smart Magnetic Connectors: Report

0

Apple has patented different types of Magnetic Smart Connector systems that might be used in the company’s iPads and iPhones.

According to some media reports, the Cupertino-based giant has patented various styles of smart connectors. The US Patent and Trademark Office granted the smartphone manufacturer a patent that details various smart connectors for chargers and smart accessories. The patent application was filed on April 10, 2018.

The patent is titled ‘Magnetic surface contacts’ and covers a range of applications relating to magnetic smart connectors.

Most of Apple’s portable electronics product line-up has shifted to wireless charging right from the Apple Watch to the iPhone, with some devices being MagSafe compatible.

As per the report, Apple is also working on two MagSafe battery pack models for iPhone 12 and one version of the battery pack is expected to feature reverse charging support.

With reverse charging, the battery pack will be able to charge an iPhone 12 while also charging AirPods from the other side at the same time.

A US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filing published after the iPhone 12 series debuted last year revealed Apple’s MagSafe protocol supports bilateral charging.

“5G will dramatically improve the capabilities of security and surveillance solutions”

0

Smartphones have given a new dimension to the security and surveillance sector, which subsequently has opened new doors of opportunities for manufacturing companies to come up with cameras that not only detect, monitor and record intrusion at your premises but also send you real-time security breach alert and allow you to talk through mobile app with the person at the other end. Oncam, a pioneer in 360-degree camera technology, is taking security and surveillance to the next level, with a varied range of products which cover wide applications across the security-spectrum. Abhishek Kumar, Regional Director, Oncam, speaks more about today’s smart security cameras, technicalities involved and their prospects, in an interaction with Ramesh Kumar Raja. Excerpts:

How smartphones are contributing to the security and surveillance sector in India?

Smartphone has today become critical in nearly all walks of life. It also holds for the security and surveillance segment as it enables customers to access relevant videos in real-time. This remote accessibility makes a smartphone a very effective device for security operations. Such digital devices make it possible to send real-time alerts to relevant stakeholders along with the applicable security feed. The person can then quickly go through the instance to confirm if the event needs attention or not.

At Oncam, we also have smart solutions available on mobile devices that help customers use their IP-driven cameras beyond security processes. These solutions add tangible value across retail and education segments as well.

What are the technicalities involved in this regard?

In reality, the key advantage of using IP cameras is ‘remote viewing’ itself on edge devices. These devices include smartphones along with video walls, desktops and laptops. The technicalities involved are quite dynamic in nature. Primarily, the device must have the capability to execute the video feed with ease while also hosting other functions of the application. It must further have a strong network connection, which is not always the case. Secondly, since a smartphone is an end-point device, the chances of a malware breach are quite high. There needs to be a robust cybersecurity framework in place that resolves such instances.

Artificial Intelligence has come up as a major development in imaging solutions. How is AI helpful in security cameras?

AI, coupled with IP-based cameras, has brought about a paradigm change wherein the manual monitoring of video feeds is largely done away with. It has eliminated human-related errors, omissions and negligence that were previously some of the major teething troubles in operations. Using AI and Machine Learning, leading-edge surveillance solutions can identify critical instances such as unauthorized entry, aggression, violence, fire and vandalism alongside others. It has also made it possible to unlock the power of surveillance for Business Intelligence features like footfall monitoring. It makes AI a force to reckon with in the field of security and surveillance.

What are the advancements we are going to see in the coming times?

In the future, we can see interesting developments around VR technology and how it can be integrated with surveillance processes. For instance, a 360-degree camera coupled with VR technology as well as surround sound can make security professionals more functional during critical events. It can completely transform the large-scale security initiatives and eliminate the dependency on multiple screens as video walls.

Can you please tell us about the products that Oncam makes and how have been their response?

At present, Oncam has 10 cameras as a part of its Evolution range and 2 cameras as a part of its newly-launched C-Series. Through our Oncam C-12 camera, we extend industry-leading frame rates with 55 fps at a full 9 MP resolution. We have further lowered the bandwidth and storage by an average of 50% on both H.264 and H.265 streams. This figure goes up to 90% when there is no motion in the frame. An additional 20% can be saved using ColorMap Compression. The TrueDetail HDR also recovers the lost details across dark and bright areas while producing clearer, full-colour, and lower noise videos through Advanced Light Management Technology.

The response has been amazing since we considerably limit the number of cameras deployed with our 360-degree and 180-degree devices. We process the video feeds coming via them using our 360-degree panorama and Dewarping techniques to provide clear 180-degree and 360-degree videos to our customers.

How Oncam is leveraging the latest security technologies for its customers amidst the Coronavirus outbreak?

Surveillance cameras play a part in protecting staff and premises and ensure that correct guidelines are followed from remote. As such, they are particularly useful in times like these when government guidelines are asking us to socially distance and continue working from home.

How important is India as a market for you? Do you have any expansion plan to venture into other countries?

We see India as a major economic center. By the end of this decade, India will be one of the major global hubs for wide-ranging market segments. Oncam has continuously expanded in the market by launching its feature-intensive, vertical-specific solutions. We have further created a robust channel ecosystem wherein we go the extra mile to train our sales and service partners. Exercise even helps our customers better understand the benefits of our solutions.

What’s your opinion about the forthcoming 5G technology in India, especially with regard to the security and surveillance solutions?

5G technology has a response time of 1 millisecond, which is 100-200 times lower than the same of 4G technology. It can also accommodate 1 million devices in just 1 square kilometer vis-à-vis 500 square kilometers needed in the 4G technology. It will dramatically improve the capabilities of security and surveillance solutions.

Facebook comes up with new ‘More Together’ campaign

0

Social media major Facebook today launched a new phase of its consumer marketing campaign in India – ‘More Together’. This phase marks the first anniversary of Facebook’s consumer marketing journey in the country, a key strategic focus area for the company, and continues to celebrate the power of connections and communities, and how people can do more together than alone.

Avinash Pant, Director – Marketing, Facebook India, said, “Facebook is deeply entrenched in the cultural fabric of India. Every day we see different ways in which people across the country come together on our platform to create meaningful connections, fuel discovery, and help and support one another. This ability to connect and share with the world can lead to endless possibilities, and we feel humbled with the stories where our family of apps has provided this value to the people. Our consumer marketing journey over the past year has been focused on showcasing these diverse stories with the underlying belief that people can do more together than alone, and we continue to rally behind it.”

The 360-degree campaign has been conceptualized and executed by Taproot Dentsu and Dentsu Webchutney and will go live in multiple languages across TV, digital, print, radio and OOH.

Talking about the inspiration behind the campaign, Pallavi Chakravarti, Executive Creative Director, Taproot Dentsu, explains, “People want to be more, experience more, inspire more, help more, relax more, shine more – it’s in our DNA, this need to do more for ourselves and indeed for the world we live in. Facebook is a means to that end – a place where people come together resulting in delightful, sometimes entirely unexpected outcomes. This campaign will capture many such stories and trace the trajectories of people like you and me, who shared something with the world and got so much more back in return.”

As part of the campaign, Facebook will leverage the power of its platform extensively to bring these inspirational stories to life and has partnered with Dentsu Webchutney to craft the creative strategy and communication across digital and social media including a digital campaign #FBPePoocho highlighting how people can get support and solutions by reaching out to their connections on Facebook.

Elaborating on the digital and social media approach to the campaign, GD Prasad, Vice President, Dentsu Webchutney, said, “On Facebook, everyone is just a conversation or comment away from unlocking the potential of achieving more together. With #FBpePoocho, we are celebrating the power of community. Our aim is to encourage people to activate their network, and in the process, help themselves and others grow. We’ve done this through interesting, everyday stories of people who’ve come together through the platform to realise impactful, incredible outcomes.”

India Wearables Market Sees Triple-digit Growth in 2020: IDC

0

The India wearables market posted a remarkable 144.3% year-over-year (YoY) growth in 2020, exiting 2020 with 36.4 million unit shipments, according to the recent data from the International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Wearable Device Tracker.

India was the only country in the top 20 to see triple-digit growth in wearables in 2020 and continues to be the third-largest wearables market globally. This growth was majorly driven by the increasing acceptance of earwear devices and upgrades to watches from wrist bands, both recording their highest annual shipments in 2020.

Earwear device shipments grew more than threefold in 2020 compared to the previous year, mainly driven by the affordable launches, and expanding use cases beyond entertainment like virtual meetings and e-learning requirements. Truly Wireless Stereo (TWS) devices were the top gainer seeing a tenfold increase with shipments totaling 11.3 million units in 2020.

Anisha Dumbre, Market Analyst, IDC India said, “Hearables became one of the most sought-after electronic categories in 2020. The newer version of hearables are much better in managing the increased audio usages and improved aesthetic and design also made them the trendsetter. TWS category saw the much-needed price corrections with several vendors launching devices at more affordable price points leading to the drop in the average selling price of TWS to $45 in 2020 from $110 in 2019.”

4Q20 (Oct-Dec 2020) recorded the biggest quarter for wearables in India, maintaining triple-digit growth. Overall, vendors shipped 15.2 million units in 4Q20, growing 198.2% YoY. This was the first quarter when shipments of watches crossed the one million mark as vendors shipped 1.3 million units during the quarter. Noise’s Colorfit pro-2, Realme watch, Apple’s watch series 6, and new launches from Amazfit provided this strong growth for watches in 4Q20.

Wristbands declined by 34.3% YoY in 2020 since peaking in 2019 as the year ended with 3.3-million-unit shipments. After the introduction of wrist bands into the Indian market, 2020 has been the first year when the category reported a decline. The increasing popularity of watches at similar price points to that of wristbands is the main factor of the decline of wristbands. With 46.7% of the share, Xiaomi continued to lead the category in 2020. Realme, which entered the segment in 2020 finished second with a 12.3% category share.

Watches grew significantly as demand for wrist bands declined during the year. Watches saw a 139.3% YoY growth with 2.6-million- unit shipments in 2020. Noise led the watch category with a 24.5% share in 2020 followed by Realme with a 15.7% share in the year. Smartwatches, which can run third-party applications on the device itself, accounted for a 24.5% share in the watch category, and Apple continues to lead the smartwatch category with a 51.0% share in 2020.

The Earwear category accounted for 83.6% of the overall wearable market share to hit 30.4 million unit shipments in 2020. BoAt emerged as the biggest player in the category, accounting for one-third of the category shipments. Samsung with its portfolio including JBL, Harman Kardon, Infinity finished second with a 14.5% share in 2020. BoAt also led the TWS segment with a 24.6% share, followed by Realme with a 13.5% share in 2020.

Jaipal Singh, Associate Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India said, “2020 was a year of transition in the audio segment from wired to wireless devices. In 2021, this category will further migrate to more sophisticated devices with enhanced audio experience being the central theme for all vendors,”. He further notes,” The high cost associated with wearable watches is not much of a challenge anymore. Also, the watch form factor is now seen as more appealing to the consumers, and vendors will leverage this shift by further expanding their watches portfolio in coming quarters.”
