WheelsEye believes FASTag will evolve into a digital currency for transportation

0

Logistics tech startup WheelsEye believes that FASTag will soon transform into a digital wallet for transportation. In 2012, India’s first ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) was started in Gurugram. It grew to a wider scale and came to be known as FASTag by 2016. One lakh tags were issued in that year by four major banks. 7 lakh and 34 lakh tags in 2017 and 2018 respectively. Today, more than 2 crore fastags are active and from February 15 onwards, fastag will become mandatory.

National and state governments and private companies are racing to claim the top spot and are pushing the bar. According to an Oct’20 article by The Hindu, Chennai Traffic Police is working on an AI-based challan collecting system that will deduct traffic fines from the FASTag wallet. Parking startup Park+ is collecting parking fees using Fastag Wallet.

It was becoming increasingly clear that fastag is evolving into a digital wallet for transportation. It will be used to pay challans, buy fuel and file GST returns along with the  paying toll tax. There are numerous potential use cases of FASTag like obtaining vehicle location, paying compliance fee, & paying loading and unloading charges.

It is reported that 80% of commercial vehicles are already FASTag enabled and 65% of the daily toll collection is dependent on commercial vehicles. But still it’s a long way to go before we make a smooth experience for commercial vehicle owners

“For fastag to be successful, it’s important that truck owners trust and adopt it. Fastag has been primarily developed for car owners, but its success hangs on the success of commercial use-case solutions. Fastag has the potential to drive the unification of the highway economy. With fastag, india is inching towards a world-class transportation system. WheelsEye also enables postpaid plans and fuel purchase on fastag,” said a WheelsEye spokesperson.

Paytm Payments Bank leads the market with 6 million Fastags

0

Homegrown Paytm Payments Bank today announced that it is the leading issuer of FASTag in the country with over 6 million FASTags, as more citizens avail the service with the government extending the deadline for its adoption. Paytm FASTag has gained popularity amongst users in the country due to its seamless onboarding and integration process which requires minimum documentation, instant activation and unmatched customer care support. Paytm Payments Bank has now enabled cashless toll payments across 250 plazas in the country.

Paytm FASTag has become the country’s most preferred toll payment method as it allows users to directly pay from the Paytm Wallet, it claimed. Users do not need to create any separate account or download a wallet to recharge their FASTags. Tags issued by other banks require buyers to provide multiple documents like ID proof, photographs, share personal details & maintain separate accounts and login credentials. Also, unlike tags from other banks which may require a couple of hours to get activated, Paytm FASTags are activated instantly from the moment users receive it, it said. All FASTag transactions can be monitored on the Paytm app. Users can raise complaints on the app itself which are addressed by a dedicated customer support team working 24×7.

Satish Gupta, MD & CEO – Paytm Payments Bank, said, “It has been our humble endeavour to empower Indians with the same convenience and seamlessness on-road that our app provides to our users in their daily lives. The innovations that we have made in technology and the deep trust in our bank have helped us become the leading issuer of FASTags in the country. Users have embraced the convenience of paying for tolls directly from their Paytm Wallet and not create separate accounts. We continuously strive to ensure that customers are always charged the correct toll and have a hasslefree time on the road. We aim to expand our services across the length and breadth of the country and contribute towards building fully digital journeys on highways.”

“There has been excitement and rise in awareness for rollable and slide-phone technologies”

0

One of the leading smartphone brands, OPPO, has been a prominent name in bringing newer and advanced technologies through their smartphones, IoT, wearables, and hearables devices. This would not have been possible without the constant focus on R&D which OPPO does quite relentlessly not only for the world but, for India too. Tasleem Arif, Vice President & Head, R&D OPPO India, who is religiously involved in creating new and mindful technologies for the next billion shared his deep thoughts and plans with Haider Ali Khan as we move in the New Year 2021.

Where’s mobile design heading in 2021?

Consumers today are increasingly relied on their smartphones to interact with the world around them.  To support more functionality, a smartphone is designed in a constant increase in size, making it difficult to hold and less convenient. This trend towards larger phones has become a growing concern for users. Armed with this insight, we have designed and introduced the concept technology of ‘slide-phone’ and our OPPOX2021 Rollable handset. Both these concepts provide users the flexibility to change the form of the phone as needed. Both these concepts represent the latest breakthrough in OPPO’s constant quest to create new mobile phone forms and show our prediction of the likely future trend for mobile design technologies.

We have been hearing about rollable, curved, and foldable technologies for two years but, these were not near to practicality. Do you see that changing in 2021 and what would be OPPO’s role in that?

We have already made significant progress in this technology. Our latest OPPOX2021 rollable handset concept showcased during the second edition of Inno Day gave a glimpse of how our innovations in 2021 will further simplify the life of consumers and their interaction with the world. All these technologies offer a new perspective on the future of devices and how humans might interact with them.

Do you see these technological achievements becoming a mass thing in 2021 because they won’t be of any use if limited to just a few?

We have received a positive response both from the customers and industry stalwarts about the new concept phones. There has been a constant rise in excitement and awareness level for the rollable and slide-phone technologies across the world.

IoT, wearables, hearables and Smart TV dominated most of R&D in 2020 whereas the smartphone took a backseat. Has the saturation come for smartphone designing?

As a world-leading technology brand, we aim to build a 360-degree ecosystem for the smart device domain for our consumers and we continue with our exploration for unique technologies in the smartphone segment. Our technology development strategy 3+N+X that we announced recently is a clear indication of our vision of ‘tech for people’ and our brand philosophy of building great products for our users.  We will continue to focus on product design, further exploring how technology and aesthetics can be integrated to create closer relationships between people, devices, and the world around them. Our product innovations, whether in smartphones or IoT products, will continue to be inspired by the importance of human values and centered upon insights of users’ actual needs.

Where do you plan to move in hearables and wearables in 2021?

IoT will continue to be a key focus area for us. We understand the needs of our consumers which is why OPPO is further accelerating into the era of the Internet of Things by actively expanding a richer IoT product portfolio. We have already launched OPPO’s smartwatch, powerbanks, and earphones for the Indian market and our TV in the China market. In the coming months, we are working towards launching more products with cutting-edge technology and aesthetically appealing designs to help consumers attain intelligent and enjoyable lives. As a world-leading technology brand, we aim to build a 360-degree ecosystem for various IoT enabled products for our consumers.

The slide phone is another aspect that OPPO is trying to make practical. Do you believe that there’s still a craving left for such phones?

Basis of our constant research to understand the need of consumers, we are extremely optimistic about slide-phone technology as the upcoming trend. Our recent partnership with Japanese design studio Nendo is aimed at exploring the possibilities of future design in the smart device domain. The ‘slide-phone’ concept phone showcased by us recently has three foldable screens that let users use the phone in multiple forms, depending on what they want to do.

Can you share some use cases for Rollable Screen and AR Glass?

Both of these innovative technologies will be the trends of tomorrow. At OPPO, the pursuit of a new form is an intrinsic goal. Owing to this culture, we have always been at the top of the innovation games. The rollable screen is an amazing concept also because it gives the user the freedom to choose what screen size they want, and are not dependent only on 1 or 2 sizes. This means users need only tap a video and the phone to automatically adjust the screen size to suit the aspect ratio, providing a full-screen viewing experience at all times. Alternatively, when reading an e-book or editing a document, the larger size provides a more pleasant reading experience. Meanwhile, message pop-ups that appear while playing a game can also present the full message without interrupting the game screen.

The second technology is the AR glass, which will again revolutionise the user experience. It exposes us to possibilities like AR streaming, where an AR app allows users to watch online and local HD videos and enjoy a home theatre-like IMAX viewing experience whenever and wherever they want. Then through AR gaming multiplayer games like the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) and tower defense games, will offer players and their friends more diverse control and a more immersive experience. Games that used to be displayed via a screen will be superimposed on the real world, creating new possibilities for players and the industry.

There are infinite possibilities that these technologies offer us, and as and when we see more and more development in these technologies, the possibilities will only increase.

How do these technologies differ from the respective competition in the market?

At OPPO, we perceive technology as a means to make people’s lives better and continue elevating our innovation and research. With our brand vision ‘Technology for Mankind and Kindness for the world’, our entire approach is towards making the life of our users better every day. The concept technologies that we have demonstrated recently showcase the latest achievement from OPPO’s constant exploration and our advanced research efforts and technical expertise. Through technology, we at OPPO are embracing a connected future in which smartphones are set to serve as the most important access point, becoming a hub of an ecosystem that connects an increasing number of smart devices.

“The core objective of ESFI is to grow esports like any other sport”

0

Although it’s a more than a decade old industry, esports has witnessed significant growth in India in the recent past, thanks to the proliferation of high-end smartphones at affordable prices as well as the rise of online multiplayer games which took the world by storm following the COVID-19 outbreak forcing people to remain indoors. To discuss this emerging trend, future prospects and challenges, Ramesh Kumar Raja caught up with Lokesh Suji, Director, Esports Federation of India (ESFI), a sports body that plays the same role which BCCI does in Cricket. ESFI brings together all the stakeholders of the esports ecosystem cohesively and gives opportunities to the budding talents to work at the ESFI’s events to train and provide experience to them. Excerpts:

How do you look at the emerging trend of esports in India, especially in the wake of COVID-19 lockdown?

Sports during lockdown were a fairy tale. With empty stadia and athletes stuck without training facilities, people turned to online gaming for the entertainment and competition aspect. Budding streamers across the country have taken advantage of the lockdown by setting up YouTube channels and Twitch streams to gain popularity, entertain audiences and hopefully enter the big leagues of online gaming.

Esports shares its similarities and differences with physical sports. Though one needs not to train physically, honing skills and practicing combos for 5-6 hours every day is a different challenge that competitive esports gamers face. Tournaments hosted by games of the MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Area) genre often host them in huge arenas with a soaring crowd that encourages competition in real-time.

Can you please tell us about the whole business of esports, its market size and opportunities in India?

Esports revolves around largely two things: Video Game and the esports athletes who play that video game, rest other things are built around these two core pillars – Game developers, publishers, broadcasting/streaming, leagues/championships, sponsorships, ticketing, esports teams.

As per our estimates, there are around 200 million esports enthusiasts in India; Opportunities are immense as esports is still in a very nascent stage. Esports is a new industry, just like sports you can look at becoming a pro esports athlete, a live streamer, caster, analyst, coach, esports arena, academies, team owner, technologies for esports, event operator and so on.

How is esports different from Fantasy Gaming and RMG? Where are they moving now?

Esports is a sport, it is competitive video game playing, coordinated by different leagues, where players participate in group gaming competitions. Viewers can watch professional gamers compete against each other in a variety of games. We are a sport because the physicality of responses of our participants leads to the result of a winner. And, esports is essentially a speed competition. The business model of esports depends majorly on three aspects – media rights, sponsorship and merchandising. There is no space for gambling or betting involvement in esports sector. Mostly esports companies never charge their players to play their tournaments; instead they give them prize money on winning the tournament.

These factors clearly embed esports as a professional sport, even the level of luck involved is no different from the traditional sports. While gambling or “real money gaming” depends largely on luck and very little to no skill involved, pairing the two together is in a way disgracing and resenting to acknowledge the skill of these pro esports athletes.

Fantasy gaming: In online fantasy (sportsbooks), players bet on sports from their homes or on their mobile devices, online bookmakers as an easy way to get access to sports betting around the clock. Fantasy has a major element of betting which comes in when you pay money to register your virtual team for a contest with other virtual teams. Here the winners gain money from the losers, with the platform taking a cut. Courts have so far ruled that picking a fantasy team involves strategy, and so it doesn’t come under the purview of gambling, like in a card game or roulette that’s based more on chance.

Real-money gaming: It means the offering, distribution, advertising, promotion and sale of any type of game played via online media in which real money is wagered on the outcome of the game.

What role does ESFI play in this regard and what are the key responsibilities of this organization?

ESFI is the sports federation and plays the same role which BCCI plays in Cricket. Our core objective is to grow esports like any other sport. ESFI brings together all the stakeholders of the esports ecosystem cohesively.

We give opportunities to the budding talents to work at the ESFI’s events to train and provide experience to them.

We had got the Bronze medal during Asian Games 2018 (where esports was a demonstration sport).

Esports is not yet recognized in India, ESFI is in talks with the relevant authorities and aggressively working to get the esports recognized just like any other sport.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently routed for #AtmanirbharBharat in the gaming sector. How prepared is India for the same?

While the stress is to become “Atmanirbhar”, I believe this is a great opportunity for the government and the Ministry of Sports to also recognize esports as a medal-prospect sporting opportunity. The gaming community which is fragmented currently can also benefit if government recognition is given to the sport.

“While the stress is to become “Atmanirbhar”, I believe this is a great opportunity for the government and the Ministry of Sports to also recognize esports as a medal-prospect sporting opportunity. The gaming community which is fragmented currently can also benefit if government recognition is given to the sport”

What have been the major achievements of ESFI?

Esports Federation of India (ESFI)’s year began with Indian team qualifying from South Asia for the e-Masters Esports Championship for PES, Arena of Valor and Warcraft III after defeating teams from Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka etc. Team India consisted of Moinuddin Aamdani (PES), Arun Mozhi Varman (Warcraft) and Sonukaran J M (Captain), Shinil R, Aditya Katoch, Manmohan Singh and Aakash Chadalavada, Dwayne Fernandes (Substitute) (Arena of Valor) e-Masters in the Asian Championship organized by the Asian Esports Federation (AESF), the regional qualifiers of which were held in January 20 in Thailand for PES, where Moin was representing India, unfortunately Moin lost a very close match against Team Malaysia. Nevertheless, Team India (AOV & Warcraft) will play at the main event of e-Masters 2020.

National Esports Championship (NESC 2020) was organized in September 20 online due to COVID-19 and Moinuddin Amdani, Abhinav Tejan and Team Random came out victorious and bagged the National Titles and secured their slot in Team India for the 12th Esports World Championship organized by International Esports Federation (IESF), the Global Finals of which are to be scheduled in February 21 in Eilat, Israel. Tejan and Moin (Tekken & PES) maintained their winning streak to win the online South Asian Qualifiers of 12th ESWC and will represent India at the Global Finals.

The festive month of October 20 brought new opportunities for the Indian esports community as ESFI started with the daily national ranking scrims for game titles like Call of Duty-Mobile, Valorant and in the month of December ESFI also included Free Fire and will be adding more games. This is a great chance for the top and underdog team to get themselves recognized and ranked; this will give them bigger visibility, which at times they lose out on. The November months Top 10 Ranked Teams for CODM are:

Blind Esports, Force One, Enigma Gaming, Heroes Official, Xpendables, Complexity Gaming, Underdog Arena, Resilience Esports, Hex Esports, Dragon knights.

ESFI also announced Community Cup for CODM & Valorant.

Esports has redefined online gaming like never before. Where is it moving now?

Esports – the world of competitive and organized video gaming emerged as some sort of an unbeatable champion in the International sporting arena in the recent past. Given the current situation the sports industry itself is in, the chance for a reinvention is ripe to open the jar of opportunities through innovation and, allow the industry to flourish with a few leaps and bounces, along the way.

How has the model of gaming on cloud been one of the biggest boons of the industry which has helped handle the sudden upsurge?

Cloud Gaming will help the casual gamers not the esports athletes, as it adds to the lag/latency.

“The Indian gaming industry has enough wherewithal and can’t be termed dependent on one game. This is a great opportunity for Indian video game developers to build innovative online multiplayer games. Games like HitWicket, WCC or mythology-based games like Raji which are all homegrown products and now have the great opportunity to encash their presence”

What are the challenges you see from a gaming point of view in India?

In the competitive realm, players require hardware that allows them to run games seamlessly at the highest performance output settings.

However, given the degree of technological finesse involved, high-performance hardware come priced at steep rates, and is not easy to acquire by competitors in time.

The industry thereby loses out on much higher participation and audiences who want to play, but have to draw a line at the pricing of the systems.

Unfortunately, there are also some infamous stereotypes that surround the players and the industry, such as obsessive hours of playing, and anti-social behaviour.

How do you look at the future of esports in India, especially after the ban on many gaming apps from China?

There is no need to panic, the Indian gaming industry has enough wherewithal and can’t be termed dependent on one game. This is a great opportunity for Indian video game developers to build innovative online multiplayer games. Games like HitWicket, WCC or mythology-based games like Raji which are all homegrown products and now have the great opportunity to encash their presence.
