“Video will always win over still pictures or audio content”

0

What started initially in 2018 as a hub to manage different Instagram communities has now grown manifold by leveraging new-age tools such as Instagram influencer engagement, mass reach campaigns, social media account management and hashtag campaigns. WhizCo is currently a leading digital and influencer marketing agency that is home to more than 10,000 content creators across different social media and short video platforms. Ramesh Kumar Raja caught up with Prerna Goel, Co-founder and CMO, WhizCo, to understand the intricacies of the new-age marketing and how this platform is contributing to the same. Excerpts:

Digital marketing seems to have undergone a massive change with the onset of video as content. How do you look at this trend?

Videos have always been among the most consumed contents online because of the increased penetration of internet and smartphones. This has, in fact, grown manifold with the spike in the popularity of social media platforms as well as short video apps, which have been ruling the fancy of young smartphone users for quite a few years now. I also feel that video consumption has gone really high especially during lockdown. It is owing to such high video consumption that influencer marketing has only spiralled upwards, propelled further by the demand for short video apps. I think it is here to stay. Video will always win over still pictures or audio content.

The COVID-19 pandemic has given a major push to digital marketing. Do you buy this argument?

Yes, the pandemic has certainly given a major push to the whole digital marketing ecosystem. While earlier we talked about how increased video consumption during lockdown acted as a catalyst, another factor behind the growth is the reduction witnessed in circulation of newspapers and similar media. More and more brands are now inclining towards digital marketing and allotting their marketing budgets in the said direction.

WhizCo

With smartphone becoming a ubiquitous device for content consumption, can we call it the beginning of a new era of content marketing?

The internet and smartphone have reached almost every household across the country, be it in bigger cities or tier 2 and tier 3 regions. This phenomenon has resulted in content consumption reaching new heights, and as they say, content is actually the new king when it comes to digital marketing.

What’s your opinion about the social media platforms that have emerged as major influencers for a brand to grab more eyeballs?

Social media is actually the primary reason that led to the introduction as well as evolution of influencer marketing as a digital marketing tool. Going by my experience and statistics, Instagram and YouTube are currently leading the space when it comes to influencer marketing. But if a brand wants to have a comprehensive reach and grab maximum eyeballs, the strategy should encompass all social media platforms along with short video apps. Of course, the selection of influencers would depend on the nature of the brand, products or services, a cross-platform strategy on social media is bound to work better in any eventuality.

Among Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Linkedin, which is more productive for a brand to get recognized?

Be it YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn, all these social media platforms have their own set of audience and own strengths in the online world. While Instagram is a hot favourite of young millennial, LinkedIn is the convergence point for all professionals. Therefore, I think it completely depends upon the nature of the brand and the kind of audience it has. It also depends on the age group that needs to be targeted.

“Be it YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn, all these social media platforms have their own set of audience and own strengths in the online world. While Instagram is a hot favourite of young millennial, LinkedIn is the convergence point for all professionals. Therefore, I think it completely depends upon the nature of the brand and the kind of audience it has”

Is message marketing via WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram also a part of digital marketing? If yes, what is its future?

Apart from other social media platforms, brands and agencies are certainly making use of instant messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram as well for their digitial marketing purposes. As a matter of fact, we can see their usage going up each day, especially when we talk about WhatsApp and Telegram in particular. The reason is obvious, as a large chunk of consumers are already using these platforms in their daily routine. However, if we talk about the future, it looks a little bleak as compared to other social media or short video platforms. The prime reason behind this is that these platforms are very restricted.

Short video platforms too are leveraging the trend of video marketing. Do they hold the future of brand visibility?

Short video platforms have seen a phenomenal rise in India as well as other parts of the world. While earlier in India we had options such as TikTok, we now have multiple homegrown short video apps, which are proving to be very effective and impactful when it comes to ensuring brand visibility. Language localisation is one of the most significant factors behind this growth, as these apps have content creators from even the remotest parts, who speak and interact with the audience in their native language. This makes it easier for brands to target a specific audience set.

Do artificial intelligence and machine learning have any role to play in video marketing?

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, which are used extensively by short video apps, help brands in targeting the right set of audience for a particular content. This helps majorly in the form of advanced algorithms and analytics tools, as it is very important to bind the user to the platform.

Influencer marketing is growing massively day by day; however, content is being compromised if we look at the quality of posts. Your comment please.

I do not quite agree with the notion of quality of content getting compromised amidst the surge in influencer marketing space. I think it has only become better. It is, in fact, due to improvement in content quality that has led brands to impart even more budgets in influencers than before. The influencers too want to attract brands, thus are focusing on making quality content and getting better engagement.

What is WhizCo all about and what are your core competencies to stay ahead of the curve?

WhizCo is a digital and influencer marketing agency that is home to more than 10,000 content creators across different social media and short video platforms. These content creators hail from across various categories and languages, thereby helping brands get visibility in desired regions and markets. Our strength lies in variety of content that we can cater to and our turnaround time. TalentSwag by WhizCo focuses on management of content creators.

What is the size of the digital marketing industry in India?

As per the data furnished by Statista, the digital advertising industry in India currently stands around INR 199 billion and the number is expected to surge to nearly INR 539 billion by the end of financial year 2024.

What are the challenges and changes we are going to see after the recent curbs on social media and OTT platforms?

We have had similar experience in the past when a few short video apps faced ban following a government order. While a void was felt initially, the development led to the emergence of several homegrown short video apps. We can expect similar activities in the social media domain. However, the curbs are more directed towards ensuring sanity of content, which we already adhere to in all our initiations. So, it would be right to mention that only time can tell how the future in the space would be.

TCL pauses launch of its low-cost foldable smartphone

0

Electronics major TCL has reportedly delayed its plan to roll out a low-cost foldable phone this year.

“In combination with recent component shortages, the COVID-19 pandemic and rising costs in foldable production, TCL has made the difficult decision to suspend the launch of its first commercially available foldable smartphone until the company can produce and bring it to market at a price point that’s accessible to as many consumers as possible,” Stefan Streit, Chief Marketing Officer of TCL, has been quoted as saying in a report.

“Although the foldable market is growing each year, it is still a premium product category,” said Streit, in a statement sent to The Verge, as per the report.

Streit stated that the TCL is “closely monitoring the market to determine the best time to launch a foldable smartphone.”

The clamshell-style foldable phone, codenamed Project Chicago, was in mid-development when the company made the decision to put it on indefinite hold. As per TCL, the delay is due in part to rising production costs and supply chain shortages.

The development comes a few weeks after the launch of Samsung’s latest foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3. TCL had decided to pause its Chicago device before Samsung’s launch.

TCL had shown off a few foldable prototypes the previous year, and again earlier this year at CES 2021, as well as a “rollable” screen design. In April, TCL showed off a Fold ‘n Roll device that could expand from a 6.87-inch phone screen to become an 8.85-inch phablet or a 10-inch tablet size.

iPhone camera performance may get damaged by motorcycle vibrations, says Apple

0

High amplitude vibrations can damage iPhone cameras’ gyroscopes, said Apple, as per a report. If The Verge, an American tech portal, is to be believed, a new post on Apple’s Support forum explains that exposing iPhones to high-amplitude vibrations, “specifically those generated by high-power motorcycle engines” could degrade the devices’ camera system.

Apple, the American premium handset maker, further recommended against mounting an iPhone on a motorbike, as the vibrations may be transmitted via the bike’s handlebars and chassis.

As per the technical explanation by Apple, if a user accidentally moves a camera while taking a picture, the resulting image can be blurry.

To prevent this, some iPhone models have optical image stabilization (OIS), which lets a user take sharp photos even if they accidentally move the camera. With OIS, a gyroscope senses that the camera moved. To reduce image motion, and the resulting blur, the lens moves according to the angle of the gyroscope.

Furthermore, some iPhone models have closed-loop autofocus (AF), which resists the effects of gravity and vibration to preserve sharp focus in stills, videos, and panoramas. “With closed-loop AF, on-board magnetic sensors measure gravity and vibration effects and determine the lens position so that the compensating motion can be set accurately,” as per Apple.

The statement from the company further states that the OIS and closed-loop AF systems in iPhone are designed for durability. However, as is the case with many consumer electronics that include systems like OIS, long-term direct exposure to high-amplitude vibrations within certain frequency ranges may degrade the performance of these systems and lead to reduced image quality for photos and videos.

The company, as per the report, has recommended avoiding exposing the gadget to extended high-amplitude vibrations.

Apple sends out invite for ‘California Streaming’ iPhone event on September 14

0

Apple’s big fall event will take place on September 14, where it is speculated to unveil new iPhones along with other bunch of highly anticipated products. The Cupertino company is likely to launch the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max, the same as the iPhone 12 series. Apple sends invite for the next special launch event on September 14. The invitation teases the announcement with the phrase – ‘California Streaming’.

Just like last year, the Apple launch event will also take place virtually at 10 a.m. PT/10:30 pm IST, and everyone can watch it online at apple.com. Same as last year, the iPhone launch event will take place all the way from Apple Park in California. The invite doesn’t reveal the name of the upcoming iPhone model, but rumors and leaks hint at the iPhone 13.

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s SVP Marketing, in a tweet, shared a short video clip that appears to also hint at an AR/ VR headset launch to some extent.

Much like every year, the Cupertino based giant, in its invite, sends out subtle hints and looking closely, you can find clues. Hinting at the A14 Bionic chipset and 5G support, the invite for the iPhone 12 series said “Hi, Speed”.

iPhone 13 – What to expect

With so many rumors being reported on since January, fans already know most of what’s coming, though the tech giant always pulls off a surprise. Months of leaks suggested some changes to this year’s iPhone, like – camera enhancements, smaller display notch, A15 Bionic chip, iOS 15 operating system, and 120Hz ProMotion display support.

The design of the upcoming iPhone model is not likely to change much except a few tweaks here and there, including the size or camera lens placement, and of course, display notch as well as a long last battery life, which iPhone users have been asking for a long time now. Based on the leaks so far, the iPhone 13 series is to be thicker than the iPhone 12 series, and that is said to be for a critical purpose – to pack a bigger battery capacity.

Another interesting feature users could see in the iPhone 13 is satellite communication. According to the Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the new models could have the ability to make satellite calls. The analyst believes the iPhone 13 will be able to connect to low Earth orbit satellites when other networks are not available. This might not seem like a big deal now, but it could become the standard feature on all leading smartphones in the coming years to come.

Although the iPhone is an absolute king in the smartphone market, this year Apple might face tough competition from newly launched Galaxy Z foldable phones from the house of Samsung and the Google Pixel 6 series. The early reception the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 are getting could put pressure on Apple to make big changes in the iPhone lineup, though the tech giant takes its own time to get into a new product category until unless there is money to be made.

JioPhone Next launch delayed; to be available ahead of Diwali

0

Waiting for the launch of Reliance’s affordable upcoming smartphone – JioPhone Next? If so, there’s an important news that may disappoint you. Reliance Jio has officially delayed the launch of its ultra-affordable smartphone ‘JioPhone Next’. Although, the company had announced in June that the new, affordable JioPhone would launch on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi (September 10). The device will now be available “more widely” around the Diwali festive season, Reliance Jio announced late on Thursday.

Reliance released an official statement stating that the most awaited JioPhone Next, which was developed in partnership with Google, is currently in advanced trials. Both companies have begun testing the model with a limited set of users for further refinement. This year, Diwali is set on November 4, so, we can expect the phone to release by the end of October. The exact release date has not been revealed yet.

Reason behind the delay

The reason behind the delay is the ongoing global semiconductor shortage, which has impacted video game consoles, automobile, smartphone, among other industries. Several factors including pent-up demand, Covid-induced slowdowns, and sanctions against some key Chinese technology companies have contributed to a shortage of chipsets, which is the key component in electronic manufacturing. The shortage had forced Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries to postpone the launch of its debut 4G smartphone, ‘JioPhone Next’. Jio, in a statement, says “this additional time will also help mitigate the current industry-wide, global semiconductor shortages.”

As per the reports, Reliance was aiming to place an order of 5 million units, of which the initial part has gone to UTL Neolync, which it expects to bring to the market over six months, but the chip supply shortage may affect its plans.

JioPhone Next – Features

Designed in partnership with Google, JioPhone Next is a 4G smartphone that offers features like automatic read-aloud of screen text language translation, voice assistant, smart camera with augmented reality filters, and much more. It is a “first-of-its-kind” device that features an optimized operating system based on Android and Play Store.

In a press note, Reliance said, “The device and the operating system will offer premium capabilities that have until now been associated with more powerful smartphones, including voice-first features that enable people to consume content and navigate the phone in their own language, deliver a great camera experience, and get the latest Android feature and security updates.”

The phone has an HDR mode and Snapchat Lenses, which is directly accessible from the camera of the phone. One will also see an option to change the language of the device’s content with just a tap of a button. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset, users will get an 8GB of inbuilt storage that can be expanded up to 256GB via micro SD card. With this device, Jio is aiming to attract more 2G subscribers and offer an entry-level smartphone at an affordable price range.

JioPhone Next – Expected Price

Although, the company hasn’t yet revealed the price and availability details of ‘JioPhone Next’, but leaks and rumors circulating online suggest the price to be around Rs 3,999 in India. More details will likely to be revealed ahead of Diwali.
