iPhone Duo Hinge Supplier Denies Display Defects, Threatens Legal Action

Highlights

  • Fine M-Tec denied its components are responsible for iPhone Duo screen damage.
  • The South Korean supplier of internal metal support plates for the iPhone Duo threatens legal action.
  • Following the October 23 launch, iPhone Duo owners reported internal screen cracking near the hinge mechanism.

Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, has been hit with its first big problem following the reports of display defects around the main hinge mechanism of the device. As social media feedback and teardown analyses pointed out the source of the screen failures, key supply chain partner Fine M-Tec has stepped up to publicly defend its hardware and refute claims of manufacturing flaws.

Why Is the iPhone Duo Facing Display Failure Reports?

Cracks on iPhone Duo Screen

The iPhone Duo was launched on October 23, 2026 and since then it has been in the limelight for screen damage issues. Users have reported the internal folding OLED display suddenly failing structurally. Reports indicate a specific failure mode, a horizontal line that appears on the centre crease of the display and then spreads to one side of the panel.

Since then, the issue has become a huge talking point with disassembly videos and stress tests discussing the structural design of the internal folding mechanism after repeated daily use.

After rampant speculation over who is responsible for the hardware failures, South Korean supplier Fine M-Tec has issued an official statement denying its parts are to blame.

Fine M-Tec manufactures internal hinge mechanisms and supporting metal plates to protect foldable OLED panels from stresses caused by folding. In a statement to The Elec, the supplier explicitly said the quality issues reported were not caused by defects in the components it supplied. The company urged the public not to reach conclusions before the objective technical investigations are completed.

Why Fine M-Tec Is Considering Legal Action

Fine M-Tec said in a public statement that it was strongly considering legal action against those making unfounded allegations about the quality of its hardware. The supplier said public allegations that blamed defects in its products on its supply line, without objective technical evidence, cause unwarranted damage to its market reputation and stock valuation.

“Foldable smartphones incorporate a combination of critical components and precision mechanical designs,” Fine M-Tec said.

The company took a firm stance against rumours and unsubstantiated reports circulating in market analyst networks and on social media, stating that linking finished-product display cracks directly to its metal support plates is not scientifically sound.

What Apple Has Said About iPhone Duo Screen Issues

Apple addressed the issue publicly after reports of cracking on the inner screen along the hinge line on early iPhone Duos.

“The response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive, and we are seeing exciting things from developers who are rapidly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor. We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement,” the company said in a statement.

What Could Be Causing the iPhone Duo Display Failures?

According to teardowns by repair site iFixit, the cracks on the iPhone Duo screen usually cluster around the central hinge support, where the internal flex cables pass from one half of the device to the other.

The teardown report highlighted the potential technical issues, which are as follows:

  • Hinge support retraction failure
  • Curved guide rail misalignment
  • Shearing or jamming of hinge components
  • Quality inspection variations

How Affected iPhone Duo Owners Can Get a Replacement

Apple has addressed impacted customers and directed them to get free screen replacement through official support channels. If you have experienced iPhone Duo screen issue that has inner screen cracking or line defects, you can directly contact AppleCare for a replacement.

It is also advised that you keep a backup of all your data before giving the device for replacement. Users can make an appointment for an inspection at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorised Service Provider to determine whether it qualifies for warranty service.

Alternatively, eligible users can utilise Apple’s Express Replacement Service through Apple Support and get a replacement phone in hand before sending the damaged phone back.
