Apple’s first foldable phone smartphone, the iPhone Duo, already went on sale on October 23, but some owners are reporting a cracked screen near the hinge within hours of use. Several owners reported their iPhone Duo screens failed during setup or after only a few hours, in some cases as they opened the phone. iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner screen and a 5.4-inch outer display.
iPhone Duo Screens Crack Near Hinge Within Hours of Use: What We Know
Shortly after the launch of the iPhone Duo, some buyers reported damage to the larger inner display. Some described their screens failing within hours of purchase, in some cases, while still going through the initial setup process or during their first few times opening the device.
Among the early buyers, a Reddit user in Australia shared that their iPhone Duo screen cracked along the hinge after about six hours of use and fewer than 20 folds. Photos and video shared on Reddit show iPhone Duo display faults concentrated directly along the crease, highlighting a physical crack down the hinge and malfunctioning pixels across one side of the screen.

Is the iPhone Duo Hinge to Blame for the Screen Cracks?
Reports say there are hinge problems. But the exact cause remains unclear. Owners of the iPhone Duo have reported feeling resistance, loud pops or an impact under the screen when they open the phone.
Some users’ durability tests also highlighted potential vulnerabilities, such as the way sand and dirt could get into the hinge mechanism and prevent the device from closing completely.
Apple’s Response and Coverage
In response to the iPhone Duo screen damage, Apple retail stores have reportedly started replacing affected units after inspection. Apple is expected to collect these defective units to analyse the root cause of the failures and make future manufacturing improvements.
Hinge failures caused by normal use fall under Apple’s standard one-year warranty, and launch-day buyers remain within the standard 14-day return window. Many iPhone Duo devices are reportedly failing, but it is unclear how widespread the defect is.

Is the Hinge to Blame?
Some early buyers have reported screen damage problems on Reddit and social media, but it is too soon to know how widespread the issue is or if all units have a structural flaw. It is currently unclear what percentage of total units are affected.
What Should iPhone Duo Buyers Do if Their Screen Cracks?
If your iPhone Duo also has hardware failures, it is recommended to
- Take clear photos and videos of the cracked screen
- Do not press repeatedly around the affected fold zone. Do not open or close.
- Have an official inspection at the Apple Store or an Apple Authorised Service Provider
The iPhone Duo is covered by a 1-year limited warranty, so you can make standard warranty claims.
