It has been hinted a few times that the upcoming iPhone 18 series is expected to bring a few subtle design refinements only. The lineup is expected to feature a slightly smaller Dynamic Island and a more cohesive look between the back glass and aluminium frame. Now, a new leak suggests that the biggest visual change could come in the form of fresh colour options rather than a major redesign.
According to tipster Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo, Apple is prioritising new finishes for the next-generation iPhones instead of introducing bold hardware changes. The leak claims that the company has largely refrained from incorporating novel Android-style features such as under-display technology or extreme curvature.
Apple’s Cosmic Orange finish introduced with the iPhone 17 Pro reportedly gained significant popularity. Building on that, rumours suggest that the iPhone 18 lineup could introduce a new ‘deep red’ colour variant. Other shades being tested are said to include purple and coffee brown.
The lack of major design changes does not come as a surprise considering Apple introduced noticeable updates with last year’s iPhone 17 Pro models. Reports also indicate that the company may be saving a more significant redesign for its anticipated 20th anniversary iPhone.
Meanwhile, another leak from Weibo tipster Instant Digital suggests that Apple may skip offering a black colour option for the iPhone 18 Pro models. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has also indicated that Apple is currently testing a deep red finish along with more traditional colours but black may not be part of the lineup.
Some reports indicated that users looking for more classic finishes might find better options in Apple’s rumoured foldable iPhone. Gurman notes that the company plans to “stay away from fun colors” for the foldable model and instead opting for conservative shades like space grey/black and silver/white.
For context, Apple offered the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max in just three colours, Silver, Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue. This was also the first time company’s premium iPhones did not include a black or dark grey variant. This trend appears set to continue as current leaks suggest that black may once again be absent from the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
The iPhone 18 Pro models are widely expected to launch in September, while Apple’s foldable iPhone could make its debut later in the year.
