One long-standing criticism of iPhones has been the low refresh rate of iPhone displays, especially when Android smartphones have been breaking ground in the department for years. The internal was flooded with memes earlier this year after the iPhone 16 series was launched with a 60Hz refresh rate. It appears Apple has finally decided to take the criticism seriously.
Recent reports suggest Apple’s standard iPhone 17 expected next year might feature a higher refresh rate display possibly introducing “ProMotion” technology to the base iPhone lineup for the first time.
Weibo-based leaker Digital Chat Station recently claimed that supply chain materials back up the rumours about the standard iPhone 17 getting a higher refresh rate. While the leaker didn’t specify the exact refresh rate, previous reports suggest it could be 120Hz matching the “ProMotion” technology currently exclusive to the Pro models.
ProMotion allows refresh rates ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz. This range enables features like always-on functionality for time, widgets and notifications as well as smoother scrolling and enhanced video playback.
The jump in refresh rate is likely tied to Apple adopting low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels for all iPhone 17 models. These panels are more power-efficient and enable ProMotion. Currently, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus use low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panels, which are capped at 60Hz.
If the rumours are accurate, the standard iPhone 17 will deliver smoother visuals and potentially bring features like always-on displays previously limited to the Pro models.
A 120Hz refresh rate on the standard iPhone 17 would mark a significant improvement offering better scrolling, smoother animations and more immersive video experiences. Moreover, ProMotion’s ability to dynamically adjust refresh rates can improve battery efficiency making it a win for users who value both performance and longevity.
While nothing is official yet, the rumour adds to the excitement about Apple’s next iPhone lineup.
