Apple is reportedly planning to upgrade the iPhone 16 with increased RAM and storage capabilities, a move driven by the growing requirements of on-device artificial intelligence (AI).
Speculation until late December suggested that Apple’s upcoming devices would retain the RAM specifications of their predecessors, with 6GB for the standard and Plus models, and 8GB for the Pro versions.
However, the evolving landscape of AI technology, which now includes complex image generation and assistant functions, has led to predictions of a future need for up to 20GB of RAM in smartphones.
A recent interesting report has come out from a Korean securities firm.

Leaker @Tech_Reve recently highlighted a report from a Korean securities firm indicating that the iPhone 16 will indeed feature enhanced RAM to support the intensive demands of on-device AI.
In addition to RAM upgrades, Apple is considering expanding the baseline storage to 256GB for its new phones.
This adjustment is anticipated due to AI models requiring access to vast amounts of data from device interactions, camera inputs, and sensor information, necessitating increased storage capacity for optimal functionality.
It’s plausible that Apple may opt to boost both the storage and RAM in the iPhone 16, standardizing 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage across the range.
This would align with industry trends, as seen with Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra which recently upped its base RAM to 12GB, and the Google Pixel 8 Pro, which launched with more RAM than its predecessor.
However, the necessity of these upgrades is under debate, especially with many of the AI features in competitors’ devices being cloud-powered.
Apple is reportedly exploring partnerships with AI giants such as ChatGPT’s OpenAI, Google, and Baidu to integrate advanced AI features into the iPhone 16.
This collaboration could indicate a reliance on cloud-based processing for AI tasks, potentially reducing the immediate need for increased RAM and storage on the device itself.

With the advancement of on-device AI technologies, Apple recognizes the need for more powerful hardware to efficiently run AI-driven features. These include image generation and intelligent assistant functions, which demand significant memory and storage capacity.
Rumors suggest that the iPhone 16 might standardize at 8GB of RAM across all models, with a minimum storage capacity of 256GB. This would mark a significant increase from previous generations, aimed at accommodating the data-intensive requirements of AI applications.
Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra has recently increased its base RAM to 12GB, and the Google Pixel 8 Pro launched with more RAM than its predecessor. Apple’s rumored upgrades for the iPhone 16 appear to follow this industry trend, enhancing the device’s competitiveness in the market.
While many AI features in competitor devices rely on cloud processing, Apple’s potential collaborations with AI powerhouses could bring similar capabilities to the iPhone 16. However, increased RAM and storage would still benefit users by ensuring smoother operation of on-device tasks and offline functionality.
Engaging with leading AI firms like OpenAI, Google, and Baidu could signal Apple’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge AI features into the iPhone 16. These partnerships might help Apple catch up in the AI space, offering users innovative functionalities powered by both device hardware and cloud services.
