Instagram will soon allow you to schedule direct messages. Yes, according to recent tech media reports, the Meta-owned platform is introducing a new feature that lets users schedule direct messages (DMs).
Social media expert Lindsey Gamble first spotted this update and Instagram later confirmed to TechCrunch that the feature is being rolled out to all users.

Highlighting why this feature is significant in a blog post, Lindsey wrote, “Instagram continues to improve its DM capabilities, and scheduling adds efficiency. It gives users the ability to plan their communications in advance, which can be helpful in many scenarios. For example, users can send messages at times when recipients are most likely to respond. Creators, in particular, will find this feature useful for scheduling brand outreach messages and responding to fans.”
According to reports, scheduling a direct message is simple – type your message, hold down the send button and pick a date and time.
Messages can be scheduled up to 29 days in advance. Until your scheduled messages are sent, you will see a banner that says something like ‘x scheduled messages.’
This feature is perfect for scheduling birthday greetings, sending reminders like airport pickups or even managing late-night correspondence without revealing your odd hours. It is also a great addition for Instagram users to stay organised on the platform.
Reports confirm Instagram is launching this DM scheduling tool before making post and Reel scheduling available to all users.
Currently, that functionality is limited to professional account holders.
In separate news, Instagram is also rolling out special features to celebrate the holidays and your 2024 memories. There’s a collage tool for Stories with an end-of-year theme.
For example, you can use a Happy New Year overlay or one of the new Add Yours templates, like the ‘how 2024 started/how 2024 ended’ format.
You’ll also notice fun extras, such as a custom effect when you like end-of-year Stories, along with a New Year font and Countdown text effects for Stories, Reels and feed posts.
Instagram has also introduced festive chat themes including New Year’s, one called ‘chill’ and even a theme inspired by Mariah Carey.
Moreover, if you use celebratory emojis or phrases like ‘Happy New Year’ or ‘Hello 2025’ in DMs or notes, you’ll uncover fun Easter eggs to mark the occasion.
