Instagram is all set to change things in terms of how you edit your content on the platform. It appears the platform will be replacing its AR filters with more realitic AI-powered video editing tools. Here’s what we know so far about this development.
For those of you who don’t remember, Meta has already confirmed earlier this year that it will discontinue Spark AR filters from Instagram in January 2025. While the company didn’t share many details while making the announcement, it is now being reported that the recently previewed Movie Gen tool will replace in on the platform.
We have already reported how Instagram head Adam Mosseri recently teased the upcoming feature in a video. Movie Gen will allow users to edit their videos using realistic AI-generated effects triggered by simple text prompts. Mosseri demonstrated the tool’s capabilities showing how it can transform various elements of a video.
The demo video shows Mosseri’s cardigan turning into a leather jacket, a gold chain being added to his neck and backgrounds shifting from snowy fields to the Eiffel Tower and even New York’s Times Square. It also hints about playful effects like adding a 3D cartoon cow or turning the user into an Animoji-style character.

“I’m super excited about Movie Gen, our early AI research model that will let you change nearly any aspect of your videos with a simple text prompt,” Mosseri shared. While he didn’t provide an exact launch date, he hinted that Meta aims to roll out the feature sometime in 2025.
The preview video shared by Mosseri sparked mixed reactions with many users expressing concerns about the potential misuse of AI-generated content. Users highlighted how it can be to create fake videos to mislead or trick people. While Instagram already labels AI-edited content such as photos tweaked with Apple’s Clean Up feature, critics online argue that these labels are easy to bypass.
Meta had previously previewed Movie Gen earlier this year as a research initiative, showing a brief demo of video generation using text prompts.
At the time, it seemed the feature wouldn’t reach users for a while, but the latest updates suggest it’s closer than expected. In any case, the introduction of Movie Gen comes after some other advancements in AI-driven video editing such as OpenAI’s Sora.
