Humane, the company behind the much-panned AI Pin wearable computer, is already seeking a buyer, according to Bloomberg.

The startup, run by former Apple executives Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, is looking for a valuation of between $750 million and $1 billion—an ambitious target after the rather abysmal launch of the product.

Humane Seeking Buyers Already

Humane Seeks Buyer for AI Pin Wearable Amid Poor Reviews and Ambitious Valuation

Reviewers have generally blasted the AI Pin, a $699 wearable marketed as an always-on AI assistant capable of weaning us from our smartphone addiction

The complaints vary from slow response times to an overall user experience that falls well short of the founders’ lofty promises of seamless, hands-free computing.

Undeterred by the criticisms, Humane created its own operating system, CosmOS, which runs on the AI Pin and connects to a network of AI models to retrieve responses and evaluate what the device’s camera detects.

For some interactions, the Pin even projects a laser “display” into the wearer’s hand – a new concept that has yet to be fully realized in practice.

Bloomberg reports that Humane has already raised a staggering $230 million from investors, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who is rumored to be working on an unrelated AI product with Apple design legend Jony Ive that might be more impressive as a use case.

Humane AI Pin: A Bad Product?

Humane is seeking a buyer for its AI Pin wearable, valuing the company between $750 million and $1 billion

Valued by investors at a hefty $850 million last year, that was before its inaugural product faced a litany of criticism from reviewers.

Brilliant ideas of the AI Pin, while its software is regarded as very undercooked and unreliable, and the hardware has low battery life and overheats easily, both problems which Humane promised to fix with firmware upgrades.

The firm is hunting for a wealthy buyer, though the pool of possible bidders does seem to be thin.

Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, and Microsoft are all making massive advances in AI, so it’s hard to say just how much Humane’s intellectual property could add to their continuing efforts.

Nonetheless, Humane’s founders seem undeterred, banking on their vision of a wearable AI future to entice a buyer – a future that, at least for now, remains more promise than reality.
