Huawei has officially unveiled its Mate 70 series at the recent Huawei Mate Brand Ceremony.

This flagship lineup, which many experts believe can challenge iPhones, includes four models – the Mate70, Mate70 Pro, Mate70 Pro+ and the ultra-premium Mate70 RS Ultimate. Here’s everything you need to know about the new smartphones.

Huawei Mate 70 Series – Availability

The HUAWEI Mate 70 series is now available for pre-order in China. The shipping dates are:

• HUAWEI Mate 70 and Mate 70 Pro – Starts December 4, 2024.
• HUAWEI Mate 70 Pro+ and Mate 70 RS Ultimate- Starts December 19, 2024.

HUAWEI has not announced any international release plans for the Mate 70 series.

Before we get to each of the models individually, let us share some info on the chipset.

Kirin 9020 Chipset Powering the Mate 70 Series

As always Huawei shared limited details about the chipset during the launch of the Mate 70 Series.

However, images posted on Weibo have now confirmed that the Kirin 9020 powers the series.

Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the Kirin 9010 is the new chipset featuring a 12-core CPU with two prime cores clocked at 2.5GHz, six mid-range cores at 2.1GHz and four efficiency cores at 1.6GHz.

This design could involve hyperthreading, where a physical core can support two logical cores. For example, the Kirin 9010 had a 1+3+4 physical core setup but used hyperthreading to achieve a logical core design of 2+6+4.

The Kirin 9020 is expected to use a similar technique.

Now, let’s get to each of the Mate 70 models and understand what each is offering.

Huawei Mate 70 – Key Features

The Mate 70 comes with a 6.7-inch FHD+ display (2688 × 1216 pixels) featuring a 1–120Hz dynamic refresh rate and second-generation Kunlun glass for durability. It’s IP68/69 rated for dust and water resistance and packs a 5300mAh battery supporting 66W wired and 50W wireless fast charging.

For photography, the Mate70 includes a 50MP main sensor with variable aperture (f/1.4–f/4.0, OIS), a 12MP periscope telephoto lens with OIS, and a 40MP ultra-wide-angle camera. On the front, there’s a 13MP ultra-wide selfie camera.

The Mate70 Pro builds on the base model, adding Wi-Fi 7 and satellite communication with a 120° ultra-wide satellite aiming angle. Its 5G capabilities are significantly improved, offering a 68% boost in peak rates over its predecessor.

It features a larger 6.9-inch FHD+ display and an upgraded rear camera system that includes 50MP super-focus main camera (f/1.4–f/4.0 aperture, OIS), 40MP ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.2 aperture), 48MP macro telephoto camera (f/2.1 aperture, OIS) and 13MP ultra-wide selfie camera.

The Pro also supports faster 100W wired charging, 80W wireless fast charging, and 20W reverse wireless charging.

Huawei Mate 70 Pro+ – Key Features

The Mate 70 Pro+ shares most features with the Pro model but stands out with an RYYB sensor for its telephoto and ultra-wide-angle cameras, ensuring better light sensitivity and colour accuracy. It also introduces AI dynamic photos for more advanced photography.

The camera setup includes a 50MP super-focus main camera (f/1.4–f/4.0 aperture, OIS), 40MP ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.2 aperture), 48MP macro telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom (f/2.1 aperture, OIS) and 13MP selfie camera.

Huawei Mate 70 RS Ultimate – Key Features

The Mate70 RS Ultimate is the most premium model, featuring a high-gloss titanium frame and a brocade material back cover. While it shares the same specs as the Pro+, its luxurious design and materials set it apart.

Despite its titanium build, the phone maintains a similar thickness at 8.25mm but weighs around 251g. The Mate 70 series will initially be available in China, offering four stylish colour options.
