HMD Global has unveiled its latest Satellite Communication Gadget named OffGrid at CES 2025. This portable satellite device ensures connectivity in areas without mobile networks covering 70% of Earth’s landmass. It joins the ranks of devices like Motorola Defy Satellite Link and builds on the growing trend initiated by Apple’s SOS service and Xiaomi’s upcoming satellite features.
Highlighting the device’s versatility, HMD’s Co-founder and CEO Jean-Francis Baril said, “HMD OffGrid is a new, affordable, portable and easy-to-use offering that’s both empowering and reliable – especially when it matters the most. So, whether you’re hiking in the mountains or skiing off-piste, HMD OffGrid ensures you’re never truly off-grid.”
Here’s everything we know about the device.

The HMD OffGrid uses L Band satellite radio to connect Android and iPhone users to satellites in remote locations. Weighing just 60g, it lets users send messages and share locations with up to five contacts via its app. Messages are sent from the user’s existing phone number, so recipients don’t need to install any additional apps.
The device includes Overwatch x Rescue™, an emergency service from FocusPoint International offering multilingual support and access to a global search and rescue network. As the CEO of FocusPoint Greg Pearson explains, “Together with Human Mobile Devices (HMD), our hope is to expand the possibilities for exploration whilst prioritising safety for all. We have proven experience and direct access to the global search and rescue network providing peace of mind to anyone adventuring beyond traditional mobile network coverage.”
Built to handle tough conditions, OffGrid boasts a three-day battery life and meets MIL-STD-810H military durability standards.
Activation is simple, users can just scan a QR code to set up the subscription and app.
OffGrid is priced at £169/$199 and launches this January in the United States, Europe and Australia/New Zealand with plans to expand to more markets in 2025.
