It joins the ranks of devices like Motorola Defy Satellite Link and builds on the growing trend initiated by Apple’s SOS service and Xiaomi’s upcoming satellite features. The HMD OffGrid uses L Band satellite radio to connect Android and iPhone users to satellites in remote locations. Weighing just 60g, it lets users send messages and share locations with up to five contacts via its app. Messages are sent from the user’s existing phone number, so recipients don’t need to install any additional apps.
