Gmail Address Change – What’s New?
Currently, Google only permits email address changes for accounts that use third-party email IDs. If your account ends with “@gmail.com,” there has been no way to change it without opening an entirely new Google account.
That limitation may soon be lifted. As per Google’s updated documentation, users will be able to change the username part before “@gmail.com” while keeping the same Google Account. The core account remains unchanged with only the visible Gmail address being updated.
According to 9to5Google, the upcoming option was spotted on Google’s official support pages. This means the feature is likely in the final stages of development and may roll out gradually to users.
Interestingly, report suggest when you switch to a new Gmail address, your old one will not be deleted. Instead, it will continue to function as an alias. This means emails sent to your previous address will still arrive in your inbox, and the old Gmail ID cannot be claimed by someone else. Users will also be able to sign in using either the old or the new Gmail address.
This means all existing data stays intact. This includes emails, contacts, Google Drive files, Photos, YouTube subscriptions, purchases, and access to apps and services linked to the account.
To prevent misuse, Google is expected to introduce certain restrictions. Users may be allowed to change their Gmail address only once every 12 months with a maximum of three changes per account.
Google also cautions that changing your Gmail address may feel similar to signing in on a new device. Some services such as Chromebooks, Google Remote Desktop, or specific app logins, could require additional setup after the change.
