Google has officially confirmed its upcoming virtual event, The Android Show: I/O Edition, for May 12. This event will serve as a precursor to the company’s annual developer conference i.e. Google I/O 2026, which is scheduled later this month. Here’s more on the latest announcement.
According to the announcement, the Android Show will be a virtual-only event starting at 10 AM PT i.e. 10:30 PM IST. Google has also released a teaser video on YouTube hinting at major announcements.
The Android Show is also expected to highlight updates across Google’s ecosystem including Android Auto, Wear OS, Android XR, and Android TV. The company is likely to share more details about feature rollouts and timelines during the event.
While the company has not revealed specific details, it has stated that this will be “one of the biggest years for Android yet.” As of now, no official features of Android 17 have been confirmed.
Google has moved up the development timeline for Android 17 unlike previous years. The company has already rolled out multiple beta updates with the first and second arriving in February and followed that up by a third in March and the latest in April.
Instead of introducing a complete overhaul like Apple did with iOS 26, Android 17 is expected to focus more on performance improvements and delivering a smoother user experience.
Based on beta updates, Android 17 is likely to bring enhancements to permission management, notifications, and quick settings behaviour. One of the notable additions could be Notification Rules, which may allow users to set custom rules for specific apps and contacts.
The update is also expected to introduce universal app bubbles enabling apps to run in floating, interactive windows for better multitasking.
Other features previewed in beta versions include a new Hub mode for widgets, improved cross-device compatibility, privacy-focused contact access controls for apps and a redesigned screen recording experience. Moreover, Android 17 is rumoured to offer deeper integration with ChromeOS.
More information about Android 17 and Google’s software roadmap is expected to be revealed soon.
