Deepinder Goyal, CEO of Zomato, took to X.com to announce that the platform achieved its highest number of deliveries in a single day.

At its peak, the platform was doing over 140 orders each second.

This feat outshines the combined total of orders during New Year’s Eve (NYE) from 2015 to 2020, highlighting a remarkable growth trajectory for the company.

Goyal also shared that users generously tipped delivery partners over Rs 98 lakhs in just one day.

On the other hand, Swiggy also experienced an all-time high, with over 1 million users active per hour and the highest number of orders per minute in its history.

According to Rohit Kapoor, Swiggy’s CEO, the app saw 1.6 times more orders on New Year’s than during the Cricket World Cup Final between India and Australia on November 19, 2023.

Interestingly, Biryani emerged as the top-ordered item on Zomato, indicating the dish’s unwavering popularity across India.

Blinkit’s Grocery Delivery Breaks Records

While Zomato and Swiggy dominated food deliveries, Zomato-owned Blinkit also experienced record-breaking demand in grocery orders.

Albinder Dhindsa, CEO of Blinkit, reported that New Year’s Day set new all-time highs in several categories, including the highest orders in a day, most soft drinks and chips sold, and the most tips received in a single day.

Remarkably, over 1.4 lakh packets of chips and 68K bottles of soda were ordered before 6 PM, with potato chips being the most popular item.

A Note on Pricing Concerns

Despite the successful handling of the order surge, Zomato faced criticism over alleged overcharging.

A Twitter user claimed that the platform charged a higher-than-usual platform fee on a particular order, despite her status as a Gold Member.

Even so, both Zomato and Swiggy have been recognized in the past for their efficient handling of order surges during major events like the IPL and Cricket World Cup Finals of 2023.

This New Year’s event further cements their capability to manage large-scale demand effectively, setting a high standard for service delivery in the industry.
