The festival’s name originates from ‘Dhan,’ meaning wealth, and ‘Teras,’ referring to the thirteenth day.
On this day, it’s a common practice to purchase metal, which could range from a simple utensil to valuable gold and silver artifacts.
The act of buying metal symbolizes warding off ill-fortune and inviting prosperity into the home.
In the evening, families light earthen lamps, or diyas, to honor Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, and Lord Dhanvantari, the god of health, seeking blessings for prosperity and well-being.
On Dhanteras, the emphasis is on buying items that are believed to bring in longevity and good luck.
These include precious metals like gold and silver, which are seen not only as auspicious but also as investments.
Purchasing new kitchenware is also a popular tradition, symbolizing the nourishment and sustenance of the family.
Certain purchases are traditionally avoided on Dhanteras.
Glass items are not recommended, as they represent brittleness and the potential for broken relationships or fortunes.
Similarly, sharp objects such as knives or scissors are avoided as they are thought to sever the ties of prosperity and peace within the household.
In essence, Dhanteras 2023 is a day to celebrate and invite abundance while adhering to age-old customs that foster a sense of continuity and cultural heritage.
Wake up early in the morning and take a holy bath. Clean the house and especially puja room.
Decorate your full house yourself .
During Puja Muhurat, place an idol of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Laxmi, Lord Kuber and Lord Dhanvantri.
Perform puja by lighting a diya with desi ghee, put tilak, offer garland and offer them sweets.
Purchase anything during the shubh muhurat and keep that things in front of the idol and perform puja by putting tilak and energizing it with incense stick.
In the evening light a diya outside house towards southwest direction offering to Lord Yama.
Ans) Do cleaning of your house first focusing on your puja room where you will perform puja in the evening .
It is advised to remove all the useless items from the house to make it Vast Dosha
free.
Try to purchase a broom as broom is also considered to be a symbol of
Goddess Laxmi.
You can worship cows on the day of Dhanteras and feed them with chapati which you make in your kitchen .
Distributing medical aid to the needy doesn’t need a day but such a act of kindness can be started from dhanteras.

Try to avoid purchasing sharp objects .
Avoid selling household things or giving money to anyone , avoid offering rice when you do charity.
Avoid eating onion, garlic, egg and meat or having alcohol to keep your spirit pure .
Ans) On Dhanteras, if you want to buy gold on November 10, the shubh muhurat is 12:35 pm onwards.
You can buy gold between November 10 afternoon to November 11 afternoon – 1:57 pm.
Ans) November 11, you can buy gold on 6:40 am and 1:57 pm.
