We have been getting reports on Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone segment for a while now. Although we don’t know much as of now, leaks and reports have been sharing a thing or two every now and then. Adding to the list of rumours is the latest word that suggests the upcoming foldable iPhone might bring iPad-like multitasking.
The foldable iPhone is expected to introduce multitasking capabilities that have not been available on traditional iPhones so far. According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the device may combine elements from both the iPhone and the Apple iPad in its software experience.
When unfolded, the phone’s larger screen is expected to display an interface similar to the one found on an iPad. This could allow users to run two applications simultaneously in a split-screen layout.
Current iPhones do not support full split-screen multitasking on the main display, except for limited picture-in-picture features used for videos and calls. The foldable model could also feature app sidebars along the left edge of the screen, a layout that is commonly seen in several iPad apps.
To support this new interface, Apple is reportedly working on developer tools that would allow app makers to optimise their existing apps for the wider foldable display.
In terms of design, the foldable iPhone is said to combine characteristics of a traditional iPhone and the iPad mini. When folded, the device is expected to resemble a regular slab-style iPhone with a standard outer display.
However, unfolding the device could reveal a much larger screen that is closer in size to an iPad mini. Reports suggest Apple may use a wider form factor with a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is somewhat similar to the proportions of the Google Pixel Fold.

The rumoured device may feature a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch internal foldable screen. For comparison, the expected Samsung Wide Fold is said to come with a 5.35-inch inner display and a 7.58-inch outer screen, which are quite close to the dimensions rumoured for Apple’s foldable phone.
In terms of hardware, the iPhone Fold is tipped to include a dual rear camera setup along with two front-facing cameras. The device could be powered by the upcoming Apple A20 Pro chipset, which is believed to be built on a 2nm process.
For connectivity, the phone may use Apple’s in-house Apple C2 modem. Reports also suggest that the foldable iPhone could feature a Touch ID-enabled power button for biometric authentication.
