Apple’s long-rumoured entry into the foldable market is starting to take shape, according to a new investor note from well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The report outlines Apple’s foldable iPhone launch timeline, shipment targets, supply chain partnerships, and plans for future foldable devices. Here’s everything we know based on the recent report.

Apple is reportedly gearing up to release its first foldable iPhone in 2026. The device will feature ultra-thin glass (UTG) with Taiwan-based General Interface Solution (GIS) managing backend processes such as cutting, inspection, and packaging. For raw UTG materials, Apple will rely on Corning.
UTG preparation is far more complex than traditional smartphone glass with production costs estimated to be two to four times higher.
Despite this challenge, Apple has raised its shipment projections. The company is now expected to ship 8-10 million foldable iPhones in 2026, followed by 20–25 million units in 2027. It is a clear indicator of Apple’s confidence in consumer demand for its foldable flagship.

After the iPhone, Apple is set to introduce a foldable iPad in 2028. This model will also use UTG panels processed exclusively by GIS. However, because of the larger display size, production costs per unit will be significantly higher.
Shipments for the foldable iPad are forecasted at 0.5-1 million units in the first year.
Moreover, Apple is also developing the Vision Air, a more lightweight and affordable alternative to the Vision Pro headset expected in 2027. GIS will again be a key supplier, handling Pancake lens production and lamination.
Reports further suggest that Vision Air shipments have the potential to touch one million units in the debut year. If this happens, it will be an additional growth opportunity for Apple’s supply chain partners.
