Apple could be gearing up for a major upgrade to its iPad software lineup. According to a new report, the company is working on releasing four new professional-grade apps for iPad. Here’s what we know about the news apps so far.

New Pro Apps for iPad

According to a recent MacRumors report, their contributor Aaron Perris has reportedly discovered new App Store IDs linked to these upcoming apps.

The news apps include Pixelmator Pro, MainStage, Motion, and Compressor. These additions would join Apple’s existing Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, both of which were introduced for iPad last year.

Compressor is Apple’s specialised media encoding and delivery software that allows creators to fine-tune how video and audio files are exported. Motion, on the other hand, serves as Apple’s motion graphics application used for designing titles, transitions, and advanced visual effects. Both tools are designed to complement Final Cut Pro, making them essential parts of a professional video editing workflow.

MainStage functions as a companion app to Logic Pro, aimed at live performers. It allows musicians and vocalists to set up and customise on-stage instruments and vocal configurations in real time. Meanwhile, Pixelmator Pro is expected to bring advanced image editing features to iPad.

In November last year, Apple acquired Pixelmator and made available a simpler version of the app on iPad. Reports suggest that now the upcoming Pixelmator Pro will likely deliver a more powerful experience, comparable to the macOS version.

Pixelmator Pro, Compressor, Motion, and MainStage are currently available for one-time purchase on the Mac. Subscription prices range from $29.99 to $49.99. As of now, it is not certain whether the iPad versions of these apps would need a subscription or not.

Launch Timeline

Although there’s no official release date yet, this development could mark a significant step in expanding Apple’s pro-level app ecosystem on iPad. The timing also aligns with the recent debut of the M5 iPad Pro, suggesting that Apple is continuing to position its tablets as true productivity and creative tools.

Interestingly, Apple did not unveil these apps alongside its new iPad hardware, a contrast to last year when the M4 iPad Pro was launched in tandem with Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro. This time, it seems Apple’s software and hardware rollouts were not perfectly in sync.
