Apple has announced two new monitors designed for Mac users, an updated Studio Display and the brand-new Studio Display XDR. The new displays are aimed at a wide range of users, from everyday computing to professional workloads such as video editing, graphic design, and content creation.
Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus said, “Apple has led the industry in delivering the world’s most advanced displays for pros to do their life’s best work, and today we do that once again with the introduction of the new Studio Display family. Studio Display gets even better with a new 12MP Center Stage camera and powerful Thunderbolt 5 connectivity. And the Studio Display XDR is a huge leap forward for XDR technology, with a mini-LED backlight, 2000 nits of peak HDR brightness, advanced color accuracy, and a 120Hz refresh rate, transforming workflows like filmmaking, design and print, and 3D animation. It’s by far the world’s best pro display.”
The newly introduced Studio Display XDR features a 27-inch display equipped with mini-LED backlighting, 5K resolution, and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The display is also capable of delivering up to 2,000 nits peak brightness for HDR content and includes Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, among other features.
With the launch of the Studio Display XDR, Apple has discontinued the Pro Display XDR. Going forward, the company will offer two Studio Display models in its lineup.

Apple says that all Macs powered by Apple silicon will be compatible with the Studio Display XDR after an upcoming macOS 26.3.1 update. However, Intel-based Macs will not be supported.
According to Apple’s technical specifications, the Studio Display XDR will operate at 60Hz when connected to Mac models powered by M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2, and M3 chips. All other features of the monitor will remain supported when used with these systems.
Both the new Studio Display XDR and the updated Studio Display retain the same overall design as the original Studio Display model.
Both monitors now include a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera that also supports Desk View functionality on the new models.
Apple has also upgraded the six-speaker sound system on both displays. According to the company, the new speakers deliver “30 percent deeper bass” compared to the previous Studio Display.

However, several advanced display upgrades are exclusive to the Studio Display XDR. These include the 120Hz refresh rate, mini-LED backlighting, higher brightness levels, and faster 140W pass-through charging.
The standard Studio Display continues to feature a 60Hz refresh rate and offers up to 600 nits of brightness.

Apple has announced that pre-orders for the new Studio Displays will begin on Wednesday, March 4 at 6:15 a.m. Pacific Time with availability starting Wednesday, March 11.
In the United States, the Studio Display continues to start at $1,599, while the Studio Display XDR starts at $3,299.
Both models can be upgraded with anti-reflective nano-texture glass for an additional $300. Apple also continues to offer a height-adjustable stand and VESA mount adapter as optional upgrades.

With the launch of the new monitors, Apple has officially discontinued the Pro Display XDR and its Pro Stand.
