Apple is continuing to shift iPhone production from China to India, partly due to pressure from the Trump administration to manufacture more devices in the U.S.

According to Reuters, a new iPhone assembly plant run by Tata Electronics in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, has just started operations. This factory is focused on making older iPhone models. Reuters states, “A new Tata Electronics plant in Hosur in south India’s Tamil Nadu state started operations in recent days to make older iPhone models on one assembly line, one source said.”

A second iPhone plant, built by Taiwan’s Foxconn in Bengaluru, Karnataka, is set to go live in a few days. The same report says, “Another $2.6 billion plant run by Taiwan’s Foxconn (2317.TW) that is under construction in Bengaluru, Karnataka state, will also start initial operations with one assembly line within days, according to four sources, including one government official.”

This facility is expected to make iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e models and could produce 300 to 500 iPhones per hour.

From a job creation angle, the Foxconn plant is expected to employ 50,000 people by the end of 2027. It’s part of a $2.6 billion investment in the region. For comparison, Apple is investing $500 billion in the U.S. over four years, with a goal of creating 20,000 jobs.

Apple’s long-term plan is to shift most iPhone production for the U.S. market out of China and into India by the end of next year. The company currently benefits from exemptions on Trump-era tariffs for Chinese imports, but those are expected to be temporary.
