It appears Apple may be preparing to bring real-time in-person translation to its AirPods lineup. According to findings reported by 9to5Mac, the latest iOS 26 developer beta has the feature to hold real-world conversations across multiple languages with translations delivered directly into their ears.

This feature was previously limited to FaceTime, phone calls and Messages.  Here’s everything we know about this.

How the AirPods Translation Feature Might Work?

Developers spotted a new system asset in the beta showing a gesture that involves pressing both AirPods stems simultaneously. The asset is tied to the Translate app and includes multilingual text in English, Portuguese, French, and German, suggesting these languages may be supported at launch.

An accompanying image displays the word “Hello” in several languages, with the gesture likely activating a Live Translation mode. The file is even named “Translate,” reinforcing the link to this new capability.

The feature appears intended for AirPods Pro (2nd generation) and the upcoming AirPods 4, pointing to reliance on newer hardware for optimal performance.

The translation processing will not happen on the AirPods themselves. Instead, the function is expected to work in sync with Apple Intelligence on compatible iPhones. This means users will likely need a recent iPhone, possibly starting with the upcoming iPhone 17 series, to access it.

This isn’t really a surprise. Before iOS 26’s beta release, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple was developing an in-person translation feature for AirPods, and these latest findings suggest it may be nearing launch.

Current Language Support

Currently, Apple’s Live Translation supports

  • Languages – Chinese (Simplified), English (UK/US), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Spain)
  • Platforms – Messages, FaceTime, Phone (on Apple Intelligence-enabled devices)

Apple has not officially confirmed the feature. However, its inclusion in the iOS 26 beta suggests it could roll out alongside the public release of iOS 26 or possibly later this year.
