Air India has made history by becoming the first airline in India to offer in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity on domestic routes. Passengers travelling on select Airbus A350, Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A321neo aircraft can now enjoy free Wi-Fi during their flights, the now Tata Group-owned Airline announced.

In a statement, the airline said, “This makes Air India the first to offer in-flight Wi-Fi Internet connectivity on flights within India, enabling travellers—flying for leisure or business—to stay connected to the Internet during their flights and to enjoy browsing, accessing social media, catching up on work, or texting friends and family.”

Air India Chief Customer Experience Officer Rajesh Dogra emphasised the importance of connectivity in today’s travel experience. He said, “Connectivity is now an integral part of modern travel. For some, it is about the convenience and comfort of real-time sharing, while for others, it is about greater productivity and efficiency.”

He further added, “Whatever be one’s purpose, we are confident that our guests will appreciate having the option of connecting to the web and enjoy the new Air India experience on board these aircraft.”

Passengers can connect to the Wi-Fi using laptops, tablets and smartphones running iOS or Android operating systems. Multiple devices can also be connected at the same time while the flight is above 10,000 feet.

Here’s how to connect to Air India’s in-flight Wi-Fi –

  • Set your device to Airplane Mode during the flight.
  • Enable Wi-Fi, then select Air India Wi-Fi from the available networks.
  • Open your device’s browser, which will redirect you to the Air India Wi-Fi portal.
  • Enter your Name and PNR Number to connect.

This service builds on an ongoing pilot program for Wi-Fi on international routes, which includes destinations such as New York, London, Paris and Singapore. Wi-Fi is currently complimentary for both domestic and international flights as part of an introductory offer.

Air India plans to progressively expand this feature across its fleet potentially setting a new benchmark for air travel in India.
