Highlights
- A manual durability test by Polish YouTuber Kuba Klawiter found that iPhone Duo can develop inner display damage after 75,001 folds with visible white and horizontal lines.
- The result contrasts sharply with Galaxy Z Fold8 rated for 500,000 folds and the Galaxy Z TriFold for 200,000 folds.
- The iPhone Duo issue involves the display rather than a hinge breakdown.
Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, reportedly developed a display failure after 75,001 folding cycles in a durability test conducted by Polish tech YouTuber Kuba Klawiter. The test involved repeatedly opening and closing the device by hand with the screen showing visible damage towards the end of the experiment.
The reported result has drawn attention to foldable phone durability, especially when compared with Samsung’s stated rating of 500,000 folds for the Galaxy Z Fold8. Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold, meanwhile, carries a published rating of 200,000 folding cycles.
iPhone Duo Durability Test Ends After 75,001 Folds
The iPhone Duo reportedly survived tens of thousands of opening and closing cycles before its inner display developed visible damage. The test was designed to push Apple’s first foldable phone through repeated use and observe when a major failure occurred.
The result is considerably lower than the 500,000-fold rating attributed to the Galaxy Z Fold8.

The test was conducted by Kuba Klawiter, a Polish technology YouTuber known for testing smartphones and other gadgets. His team purchased the iPhone Duo independently and carried out the experiment without Apple’s support, according to reports.
Klawiter has previously tested foldable smartphones from other manufacturers including Samsung and Motorola. Earlier tests of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip3 and Galaxy Z Flip5 reportedly recorded more than 400,000 folding cycles before the end of testing.
What Failed: The Hinge, Display or Entire Phone?
The main reported failure in the iPhone Duo test involved the display rather than a confirmed complete hinge breakdown. After the phone had undergone repeated folding cycles, a prominent vertical white line appeared on the inner screen, followed by a horizontal line.
The damage became visible after the device had been placed on a bowl of ice for around 19 minutes to simulate cold-weather conditions. Its temperature reportedly dropped from above 30 degrees Celsius to approximately 6–7 degrees Celsius. After the phone was removed, wiped and placed on a desk, the screen developed the visible lines.
There have also been reports of cracked iPhone Duo displays from early users. Separately, a Korean YouTuber who disassembled a device reportedly found a broken hinge component. These reports raise questions about durability.
Was the Test Automated or Performed by Hand?
Klawiter’s test was performed manually with participants taking turns opening and closing the phone. This differs from an automated test in which a machine repeats the same movement under controlled conditions.
Manual testing can introduce variations in how the device is handled including the force and speed used during folding. The test also included environmental exposure intended to imitate everyday situations.
The @KubaKlawiter crew is running a massive iPhone Duo folding test. They surpassed @JoannaStern record of 32,641 folds a long time ago and have already gone well past 35,000 – and they’re still going!
This is the stream of the year, and they’ve been at it since yesterday. https://t.co/Ds9G2NMb8d

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Is Rated for 500,000 Folds
In previously conducted tests, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 is rated for 500,000 folds. That is substantially higher than the 75,001 cycles recorded before the reported iPhone Duo failure.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 is an eighth-generation foldable smartphone with a single hinge. Its more mature product generation is an important point of context when comparing it with the iPhone Duo, which is Apple’s first-generation foldable device.
iPhone Duo lasted 75,000 folds in a test before breaking at the 75,001 fold
Galaxy Z Fold8 series is rated for 500,000 folds, Galaxy Z TriFold is rated for 200,000 fold
75,000 folds is 102 folds daily for 2 years
500,000 folds is 136 folds daily for 10 years
200,000 folds is 109 folds daily for 5 years

How Samsung Tests the Galaxy Z Fold8 Hinge?
A fold-count rating is intended to communicate how many opening and closing cycles a foldable device is designed to withstand under specified testing conditions. Samsung’s reported 500,000-fold rating for the Galaxy Z Fold8 provides a benchmark for its expected mechanical endurance.
However, details the Galaxy Z Fold8’s exact testing procedure including the force applied, folding speed, environmental conditions or criteria used to determine failure remain unconfirmed.
How the Galaxy Z Fold8 Rating Compares With the iPhone Duo Test
The figures highlight a sizeable difference but they describe different things.
The iPhone Duo figure is a reported result from a specific device subjected to a manual endurance test. The Galaxy Z Fold8 figure is a manufacturer-related durability rating reported by the tipster, rather than the result of an equivalent independent test presented here.
The Galaxy Z Fold8’s 500,000-fold rating is approximately 6.7 times the iPhone Duo’s reported 75,001-fold result.
Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold Has a 200,000-Fold Rating
Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold has a published rating of 200,000 folding cycles for its main display. Samsung says this is equivalent to folding the device approximately 100 times per day for five years.
The TriFold differs from conventional book-style foldables because it has two hinges and folds in two places. It measures 3.9mm thick when unfolded and is a first-generation device.
Its 200,000-fold rating is lower than the 500,000-fold figure attributed to the Galaxy Z Fold8, but the two devices have different folding mechanisms. The TriFold’s additional hinge and multi-folding design make it a different engineering challenge from a phone with one hinge.
How Long Would 75,001 Folds Last in Everyday Use?
The number of folding cycles can be converted into an approximate number of days, depending on how frequently a person opens and closes their phone.
At 100 folds per day, 75,001 folding cycles would take approximately 750 days, or a little over two years, to reach.
The following calculations illustrate how the reported figures translate into daily use:
| Folding cycles | Folds per day | Approximate time |
| iPhone Duo: 75,001 | 100 | 750 days, or about 2.1 years |
| Galaxy Z Fold8: 500,000 | 136 | About 10 years |
| Galaxy Z TriFold: 200,000 | 109 | About 5 years |
iPhone Duo vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: What the Tests Actually Prove
The reported results put the iPhone Duo’s durability under scrutiny but the differences in test methods are important when interpreting them.
The iPhone Duo test provides a specific example of a device developing visible display damage after repeated folding and cold exposure. It does not identify the exact cause of the failure or establish the failure rate among retail units.
The Galaxy Z Fold8’s reported rating indicates a much higher target for folding endurance. And the TriFold’s two-hinge design is different from the single-hinge mechanisms in the iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold8.
Does the iPhone Duo Have a Foldable Durability Problem?
The reports of cracked displays from early users raises questions about the iPhone Duo’s durability. The fact that the screen developed visible damage after 75,001 folds is particularly noteworthy because foldable displays must withstand repeated bending while remaining functional.
However, one test cannot establish how frequently retail iPhone Duo units will fail. Reports about other iPhone Duo endurance experiments have described changes to the display crease and hinge feel after repeated folding but the methods and number of cycles varied.
For now, the iPhone Duo’s reported failure after 75,001 folds is a reason to watch its long-term durability closely rather than conclusive proof that the entire model has a defect. The Galaxy Z Fold8’s reported 500,000-fold rating is a much higher but a fair verdict will require evidence from real-world use.
Samsung Mocks iPhone Duo Durability
Joining the discourse on iPhone Duo’s durability, Samsung has released a video ad poking fun at iPhone Duo’s durability, weight and thickness.
