WhatsApp is developing a new feature for its Android app that will let users mute everyone mentions in group chats. The update is designed to give participants more control over their notifications, helping reduce unnecessary distractions in busy groups while ensuring they don’t miss important messages. Here’s what we know about the feature as of now.
According to recent WABetaInfo’s report, the Meta-owned messaging platform is testing the feature in the WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.27.1. WABetaInfo is a reliable source for WhatsApp updates.
The option appears in the notifications settings, alongside existing mute controls for group chats. Once enabled, it silences notifications specifically triggered by the @everyone mention, preventing users from being alerted every time someone tags the entire group.
Currently, the @everyone mention allows any group participant and not just admins to notify all members in the chat. While this is useful for announcements, it is often misused and can cause disruptions in large, active groups.
With this new option, users will be able to mute @everyone notifications while still receiving alerts for direct mentions and regular messages. This ensures that important updates aren’t missed, while mass mentions no longer overwhelm the notification feed.
The feature will also include a manual toggle, giving users full control over when they want to activate or disable it, depending on their needs.
At present, the feature is still under development and is not available to beta testers in the Google Play Beta program. However, reports indicate that WhatsApp could roll it out to testers in the coming weeks through a future app update.
