WhatsApp is working on a new AI-powered feature that can summarise unread messages in your chats, groups and channels. It’s similar to Apple’s notification summaries. But unlike Apple Intelligence being only available on select devices, WhatsApp’s version could reach a wider audience. Here’s what we know so far.

Once turned on, if you have a bunch of unread messages, you’ll see a new “Summarise with Meta AI” button instead of the usual “X unread messages” label. Tap it, and you’ll get a short summary of the missed conversation.
WhatsApp says that your messages aren’t stored or tied to your identity. The AI summary happens in an isolated cloud environment and is deleted right after processing. Also, if a chat has Advanced Privacy enabled, the summarisation feature won’t work, AI won’t interact with those messages at all.
As of now, this feature is only available for some users on the Android beta version and is being rolled out slowly. There’s no word yet on when it will be available on iOS or what languages and regions it will support.
Meanwhile, rumours suggest that another feature in the works is Writing Help. This AI tool would let users tweak the tone or clarity of their messages before hitting send. It will also use the same Private Processing setup to keep everything secure and private.
