WhatsApp is getting ready to roll out a much-needed threaded replies feature that should make busy group chats easier to follow. First spotted in the Android beta last March, the feature is now being tested on iOS too, hinting at a wider release in the near future. Here’s what we know so far.
WhatsApp – Threaded Replies in Group Chat

According to trusted WhatsApp beta source WABetaInfo, the latest WhatsApp beta on iOS via TestFlight includes early support for threaded message replies. This means you’ll soon be able to reply directly to a specific message and view all related responses in one place. It will be just like you can in apps like Slack.

WABetaInfo report explains, “By tapping on this indicator, users will be able to open a new screen that displays all replies related to the original message in an organized view. (…) Within this new screen, users will not only be able to read all the replies but also send a new reply directly, which will automatically be added to the same thread. This ensures continuity and keeps related messages neatly grouped together.”
In the current version, you’ll see a reply count indicator on the original message. While the replies don’t yet show up in a neat thread within the chat, tapping on the indicator opens a dedicated screen that displays all responses to that message.
If you’re in a group where conversations move fast, it’s often hard to keep up or jump back in without getting confused. Threaded replies could help organise the chaos as long as people actually use them.
This isn’t the only feature WhatsApp is working on to improve group chats. The app recently introduced AI-generated message summaries in the U.S., which let users quickly catch up on unread messages. A wider global rollout of this feature is expected soon.
With the feature now being tested on both Android and iOS, threaded replies look set to arrive for everyone in the coming weeks.
