Announced in a detailed blog post, WhatsApp said, “We hope this feature helps break down language barriers and allows users to connect more deeply with loved ones and communities around the globe,”
To access the feature, users need to ensure that their app is updated to the latest version.
Using the tool is simple. Here’s how you can use the WhatsApp Message Translation feature –
For Android users, WhatsApp is also introducing an automatic translation option for entire chat threads. This ensures that all future messages in a conversation are translated automatically, without the need for repeated manual actions.
The rollout includes a different set of languages for Android and iOS users at launch.
Interestingly, iPhone users will have access to over 19 languages, which is significantly more than the initial six available on Android.
The Meta-owned platform highlighted that user privacy remains central to the update. All translations are processed directly on the user’s device, which means WhatsApp itself cannot access or view the content being translated.
This means the translations remain end-to-end encrypted, since everything happens on the device. “With more than 3 billion users in over 180 countries, we’re always working to keep our users closely connected, no matter where they are in the world,” the company wrote in a blog post. “But we understand that sometimes language can be a barrier to getting things done or expressing how you truly feel. That’s why we’re excited to bring message translations to WhatsApp, so you can more easily communicate across languages.”
The message translation feature has already begun rolling out on Android and iPhone devices starting Tuesday. As for broader availability, it is expected to reach more regions in the coming weeks.
