  • Zepto apologised after an inappropriate marketing message went viral.

Social media often brings forth stories that not only start a conversation but help us come across diverse opinions.

Every day we have some stories going viral that then invite reactions, sometimes positive but mostly not.

Recently, a Delhi woman’s post on X (previously Twitter) bragging about her boyfriend’s frugalness even when he takes home a heft paycheck gained attention.

Anu Srivastava, a writer and artist, posted on X, “My boyfriend with 42 LPA package waited 42 minutes for Zepto to remove the ₹80/- surge charge *shruggie emoji.*”

The post quickly went viral inviting almost every type of reaction possible.

While some users showed positive reactions to the thrifty mindset, many were quick to question if this type of extreme behaviour was just to show off given his income level.

Several other X users also supported her post and praised the lifestyle choice of her boyfriend.

“It’s hard-earned money,” X user Ratan Ranjan (@16Ranjanr) said. “A girl dating a boy for money will not understand it.”

To that, Srivastava replied, “It is. And I agree with your last line that is why I respect his decision of doing this.”

Another user Amit Misra (@amit6060) wrote, “Financial planning level: CEO salary, college student spending.”

“Nothing wrong in it. In fact, I am impressed, though having such a huge package he is considering saving small amounts,” added Meeth Desai (@DesaiMeeth).

The post also inspired many other X users to come forward with their own saving hack stories when they used delivery apps.

“During the surge, I order food from Zomato, call the delivery guy, and ask him to bring milk on the way, then tip him instead, win-win for both,” wrote Aaraynsh (@aaraynsh).

Nonetheless, the post managed to spark a conversation about the importance of financial mindfulness in today’s uncertain world. As many users rightfully pointed out despite how much you are earning, we must learn how to value money.

A user named Aman noted, “Being rich and staying rich are two different things.”

Recent Zepto Controversy

The last few days have been eventful for Zepto, known as the next-door quick commerce app. The app also sparked a controversy when one of its marketing gimmicks was met with criticism online.

Pallavi Pareek, a legal expert in workplace diversity and sexual harassment prevention shared a screenshot on Linkedin of an inappropriate marketing message by Zepto. “I miss you, Pallavi, says I-pill Emergency Contraceptive pill,” the notification read in the screenshot shared.

Outraged Pallavi Pareek also clarified in her post that she had never ordered the mentioned product from Zepto before.

“I have never ordered an emergency pill from you. Even if I did, you should know that this is not something that should be missing me or I should be missing it. You want me to have a need of taking an emergency contraceptive?,” Pareek wrote.

Pareek further added, “Messaging is right only if it is sensitive or humorous or has some logic to it. I draw a line when your notifications are flirty or trying to be sleazy cheesy. But this is a little too much.”

After criticism and rightful outrage on social media, Zepto issued an apology and acknowledged the “thoughtless and potentially harmful” nature of their message.

“We understand how this was a misfire on a lot of levels,” the company stated. “We value your trust and well-being above all. This mistake won’t happen again,” they concluded.
