Disney and OpenAI’s Sora Join Hands
Under the three-year licensing agreement, Sora will be able to generate short, user-prompted social videos that fans can view and share. These videos will draw from a library of more than 200 animated, masked, and creature characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars.
The licensed assets also include costumes, props, vehicles, and iconic environments. Additionally, ChatGPT Images will allow users to generate fully rendered images from just a few words, using the same intellectual property. However, the agreement does not include any talent likenesses or voices.
Alongside content licensing, Disney will also become a major OpenAI customer. The company plans to use OpenAI’s APIs to build new products, tools, and experiences including integrations for Disney+. It will also deploy ChatGPT across its workforce.
As part of the deal, Disney will make a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI and will also receive warrants to purchase additional equity in the company.

As part of the partnership, OpenAI has committed to strengthening its leadership in trust and safety by implementing age-appropriate policies and additional safeguards across its services. Both OpenAI and Disney have also reaffirmed their commitment to robust controls that prevent the generation of illegal or harmful content, respect the rights of content owners in AI-generated outputs, and protect individuals’ rights to control the use of their voice and likeness.
