Tecno introduced a camera technology called Universal Tone designed to improve skin tone accuracy back in 2023. The aim of the new tech was to ensure a more natural representation of all complexions in photos. The company since then has continued refining the tech and even launched a web tool to help users identify their true skin tones with a single click.
But it appears Tecno is in no mood to slow down and is taking things even further. The company has now announced an upgraded version of Universal Tone featuring a larger skin tone database and an improved Multi-Skin Tone Color Restoration Engine for even more precise colour reproduction.
The biggest upgrade is in the Multi-Skin Tone colour card, which now features 372 patches, up from 268 in the previous version. This means Universal Tone now has more skin tone data to work with ensuring that your photos look even more natural and lifelike.

Created in collaboration with the University of Leeds (UK) and Dar Al-Hekma University (Saudi Arabia) in late 2024, this custom colour card includes 187 unique Saudi skin tone patches, ensuring a better representation of the region’s diverse complexions.
Along with the expanded dataset, Tecno has enhanced its Multi-Skin Tone Color Restoration Engine with two key upgrades –
According to Tecno, these upgrades boost skin tone accuracy by over 50%, which makes Universal Tone its most advanced skin tone optimisation technology yet.
The new and improved Universal Tone will make its debut in the Tecno Camon 40 series, which is set to launch at MWC 2025.
