Tecno has made some headlines at its Future Lens event in Shanghai, where it unveiled three groundbreaking camera technologies destined for its future Phantom X series and possibly other models.
The company is no stranger to innovations and the smartphone maker’s capabilities have been aptly on display with the Tecno Phantom Fold and Tecno Phantom X2 Pro.
This time around though the company’s features are likely to be taken to the very next level.
Here’s an in-depth look at the three innovations.
Drawing inspiration from the unique eye structure of a cuttlefish, Tecno introduced the W-shaped adjustable aperture.
This novel design aims to tackle the common problem of glare in photography, particularly in challenging lighting conditions like strong backlight scenarios.
The feature sounds good in principle but getting a good implementation will be the most challenging of tasks.
Furthering its goal of breaking new ground in smartphone photography, Tecno also showcased a liquid telephoto macro lens within a periscope module – a first in the industry.
The traditional bulkiness of periscope modules has been a barrier to achieving macro focusing, but Tecno’s solution uses voltage to adjust the lens’s curvature.
This allows for dynamic focusing from distances as close as 5cm.
Unlike the usual practice of utilizing ultrawide cameras for macro shots, which often results in distorted images, Tecno’s approach, with its longer focal length, can promise more authentic and distortion-free macro photography.
The third unveiling was Tecno’s Universal Tone technology, seemingly an answer to Google’s Real Tone, which employs three AI engines.
These are designed to enhance skin tones in photos, and are said to offer a more natural and striking look.
The technology uses a colour spectral matrix based on skin colour chromatic research, along with 3D image tone mapping and multiple AI algorithms, to calibrate and adjust skin tones.
The result is a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing portrait output.
While Tecno hasn’t specified which upcoming models will feature these technologies, predictions lean towards their Phantom X series.
It is the company’s most advanced lineup of devices, bordering on flagship territory.
If Tecno does manage to pull this off then the technology community can definitely add another name to its list of highly innovative smartphone brands.
Meanwhile, in some more Tecno news, the company aims to break into the top 5 list of OEMs in India.
To that end the company has 24 new smartphone launches planned in 2024, focusing on premium products and expanding beyond tier II cities.
According to CEO Arijeet Talapatra, as reported by ETTelecom, nearly half of Tecno’s 2024 smartphone lineup will be 5G-enabled to cater to the increasing demand for 5G technology in India.
Tecno’s W-shaped adjustable aperture, inspired by cuttlefish eyes, aims to address the challenge of glare in photography, especially under strong backlight conditions. This innovative feature’s success hinges on its effective implementation though.
Tecno’s first-of-its-kind liquid telephoto macro lens within a periscope module uses voltage to adjust lens curvature for dynamic focusing. This technology, different from the usual ultrawide cameras for macro shots, promises distortion-free macro photography with authentic imagery.
Tecno’s strategy for expanding its market presence in India involves launching 24 new smartphones in 2024, focusing on premium products. The company aims to extend its reach beyond tier II cities into urban and metro markets, aligning with the growing demand for high-end smartphones in these areas.
The Tecno Spark Go 2024 stands out in its price range with its 6.6-inch display featuring a 90Hz refresh rate, a feature typically not found in budget smartphones.
Additionally, it boasts DTS Dual Stereo speakers and a Dynamic Port, enhancing its audio and notification capabilities. These features make the Tecno Spark Go 2024 a unique offering in the budget smartphone category.

Tecno plans to boost its presence in the Rs 15,000+ segment, targeting to sell 1.5 million devices in 2024, a notable increase from 7.5 lakh devices sold in 2023.
Tecno has expanded into the foldable smartphone market with its PHANTOM V Fold, marking its entry into the premium segment and showcasing its commitment to innovation.
Tecno is actively utilizing recycled plastics and ensuring compliance with e-waste management guidelines. Products like the Phantom X2 Pro and Phantom V Fold showcase this commitment.
Tecno’s launch of foldable phones reflects consumer demand and market trends. Crafting the hinge and using the “Made in India” approach have enabled a competitive price.
The Megabook launch marks Tecno’s entry into the laptop market, highlighting the company’s drive for innovation and commitment to diverse consumer needs.
A Tecno’s strategic move into the gaming segment with the POVA series is a testament to the brand’s adaptability and vision.
Recognising the burgeoning gaming community and the vast market potential, Tecno designed the POVA line as a performance-first offering.
These devices are packed with robust batteries, ample RAM and ROM, and distinctive aesthetics, all tailored to meet the unique demands of gamers and tech enthusiasts.
Positioning itself as both a performance and category leader, Tecno is carving a niche in an increasingly competitive landscape.
The brand’s focus on innovation and understanding of the rapidly growing gaming market positions it well to cater to the unique needs of its target audience.
