HIGHLIGHTS * PlayStation 5 sales figures are recorded upto the week ending on July 16, 2023. * The figures recorded include both digital and disc PlayStation 5 variants. * The PlayStation 5 is currently available with a Rs 7,500 discount in India. * Sony PlayStation 5 will be available at its lowest price ever in India from July 25. Sony Corporation has announced that it has sold 40 million PlayStation 5 consoles globally since the launch. The company reported 10 million sales mark in July 2021, in 8 months of launch, making it the fastest selling PlayStation console ever, and hit 30 million mark in December 2022. As of early 2022, the company had shipped over 117 million PS4 units, and about 157 million PS2 as of 2013. It took 6 years for PS4 to reach 100 million. Since PS5 has reached almost half this feat in less than 3 years, it should take less time to reach this milestone. After a supply issue for a long time, Sony has confirmed that the PS5 supply is well-stocked, and the demand is finally being met. It is also running several offers to boost the sales. It is also coming up with exclusives like Spider-Man 2. Sony PlayStation 5 Regarding the new milestone, Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment, said: We launched PlayStation 5 in November 2020 and the world was in a strange and different place than when we announced the console in 2019. Despite the unprecedented challenges of COVID, our teams and our partners worked diligently to deliver PS5 on time. We continued to face headwinds with the pandemic, and it took months for supply chains to normalize so we could have the inventory to keep up with demand. For more months than I care to remember, we kept thanking our community for their patience while working through these issues. But now PS5 supply is well-stocked and we are seeing that pent up demand finally being met. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced that 40 million PlayStation 5 units have been sold worldwide. These numbers are as of the week ending July 16, 2023, which means it must have sold many more since then. Sony has Sold 40 Million PS5s The sales data is for both the disc and digital editions of the current-gen gaming console. The PlayStation 5 crossed the 30 million mark in January this year. It means it took about half a year to sell another 10 million units. The number of units Sony has been able to move is only increasing, thanks to the improved supply chain. In fact, Jim Ryan, President and CEO of SIE has assured PlayStation 5 supply is now well-stocked and they are finally able to meet the pent-up demand. This has increased excitement for gamers around the globe who have struggled in the past to buy the new console. Gaming Console This problem was due to the very limited availability of the console as there were chip shortages and COVID-19 lockdowns in many parts of the world. Even the units that became available for purchase were usually bought by scalpers using shopping bots and resold for hefty prices. It is now a lot easier to buy the PlayStation 5 even in India. Sony is currently running a special PlayStation 5 deal where it is offering flat Rs 7,500 off on the disc version. The console can now be grabbed for Rs 47,490 (until August 7) through any of the online and offline retailers. If you can avail bank offers with the deal, you can get it for even cheaper. Sony recently unveiled the PlayStation 5 Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition console. It has custom PlayStation 5 faceplates and a DualSense controller design inspired by the symbiote but these can also be purchased separately. The bundle also includes a voucher code to redeem Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 digital edition once it releases on September 20. Buyers will get all the pre-order bonuses of the game too. The console bundle itself is available for pre-orders and will go on sale from September 1. Sony PlayStation 5 Consoles Faqs 1) Sony passes 40 million PS5 sales, says console is ‘well-stocked’.Details? Ans) Sony announced it has sold over 40 million PlayStation 5 consoles. In a recent press release, the company said it hit the milestone despite the “unprecedented challenges of COVID” and a months-long wait for “supply chains to normalize.” Now, Sony says PS5 supply is “well-stocked” and keeping up with demand. Sony boasted about the PS5’s catalogue of games, calling it the “best” in PlayStation history, with over 2,000 titles now available. The boast is a stark difference from when the PS5 hit 10 million units in July 2021, which saw the company claim the PS5 as its fastest-selling console. PS5 sales are also growing, with the company shipping 6.3 million units between January and March 2023, up from 2 million units the same time last year. Sony also hit the 38 million sales mark at the end of April 2023. 2) Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) To Get a Rs 7,500 Discount for a Limited Period.Details? Ans) Sony has announced a limited-period discount for its latest and greatest gaming console – PlayStation 5 (PS5). Notably, Sony launched the PS and PS5 Digital Edition in 2020, but it didn’t arrive in India until 2021. However, due to supply shortage, Sony has been restocking the new console periodically in the country and even hiked the price by Rs 5,000 in November 2022 due to dwindling global economic conditions. It seems that the supply woes of Sony are over now, and it has now started offering deals and offers to customers instead of focusing on just making the console available. The PS5 launched for Rs 49,990 for the standard disc edition and Rs 44,990 for the Digital Edition. After the hike, it retailed at Rs 49,990 and 54,990 for digital and standard editions, respectively. Sony will now offer the standard disc edition of the console for Rs 7,500 less at Rs 47,490 from July 25 to August 7. It is the lowest-ever pricing for the standard edition PS5 directly from the brand itself. The offer brings the price lower than the original launch price of the console. However, interested buyers need to pick the console from eligible retailers listed below to avail of the offer. 1. Amazon 2. Flipkart 3. ShopatSC 4. Reliance 5. Croma 6. Vijay Sales Previously, Flipkart offered the disc edition for as low as Rs 45,115 to Flipkart Axis cards and Rs 47,500 to other bank card users. However, it also included discounts from Flipkart SuperCoins and Rs 1,000 off prepaid orders. The new offer announced by Sony is a direct discount and doesn’t require any specific card or coupons to avail. Interested buyers can purchase at the retailers mentioned above and grab the discounted price right away during the offer period. It is the right time for those holding on to their PS purchase to grab one or PS4 users to upgrade. Considering PS4 consoles are now discontinued, and PS4 discs are also compatible with PS5, this is the opportune moment. Besides, the latest games like Hogwarts Legacy and God of War Ragnarok are best played on PS5. Several exciting new launches are also lined up, like The Crew Motorfest, Marvel’s Spider Man 2, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and more. 3) Sony PlayStation 5 to get Rs 7,500 discount.Details? Ans) The Sony PlayStation 5 starts at Rs 49,990 for the Digital Edition and Rs 54,990 for the Standard Edition that comes with a disc slot. Now, in the sale, the Standard Edition will be available for Rs 7,500 discount. This will take the price down to Rs 47,490. It is worth noting that this offer will be directly by the brand. That said, the console will be available at that price from authorized stores such as ShopAtSC, Reliance, Amazon, Flipkart, Croma, and Vijay Sales. The offer period will be between July 25 and August 7. Sony hasn’t offered this deal for the Digital Edition and it is unclear if it will do that anytime soon. But if you were thinking about buying the Standard a.k.a Disc Edition for a while, this will be your chance. The aforementioned discounted pricing is lower than the launch price. For the unversed, the console was launched in 2020 for Rs 49,990 (Standard Edition). However, it received a price hike of Rs 5,000 in November 2022. Having said that, the Rs 47,490 pricing is a steal deal for the PS5 console. Although, Flipkart did offer the console for as low as Rs 45,115 in sales, but that was with bank offers. Here, apparently, there isn’t any bank offer included. Sony PlayStation 5 is powered by AMD’s custom Zen 2 CPU paired with RDNA 2 GPU. The console has 16GB of GDDR6 RAM and 825GB of PCIe Gen 4 SSD storage. The console has the capability of running games at 4K resolution. In other news about PlayStation 5, Sony recently announced the Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition Bundle. The bundle includes the PS5 console, DualSense wireless controller and voucher for a digital copy of the game. Interestingly, Sony has also launched Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition covers for PS5. So those who already own the console can jump on Spider-Man 2’s hype train. For the unversed, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 game is launching on October 20 for the PlayStation 5. The game’s pre-orders began sometime back. The sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man will have both Miles Morales and Peter Parker (this time in the Venom suit).
