Highlights A Reddit thread flagged inappropriate content on supposedly child-friendly channels. These videos aren’t labelled as child-friendly but aren’t age-restricted either. Despite YouTube’s efforts, videos with violent, explicit, or unsuitable material often appear regulation-free on the platform. Inappropriate content on YouTube for kids has been a long concern for parents and guardians. There have been many discussions and deliberations over the best ways to handle this for parents, creators and the platform. However, despite YouTube’s efforts to filter and restrict such content, some videos with violent, explicit, or otherwise unsuitable material often slip through the cracks. Recently, a Reddit thread emerged flagging weirdly inappropriate content on YouTube generating millions of views with no intervention from the platform. The channels that appear to be child-friendly are posting videos with highly inappropriate thumbnails and content. Image Credit – Android Authority While these videos aren't labelled as child-friendly, they aren't age-restricted either. This means anyone can view them on YouTube, even without an account. A few Reddit users even pointed out that these supposedly kid-focused animation channels are featuring adult-themed thumbnails and even questionable titles. Shockingly, one of these videos mentioned an Islamic sermon in its title. Some of these channels are blatantly using pornographic thumbnails. One of the worst offenders is the X Studio channel. This channel not only displays adult-themed thumbnails. Image Credit - Redditor Killher_Cervix It also features implied nudity, sexual content, and characters being groped and harassed. These videos can negatively impact young viewers, exposing them to themes and language that are not age-appropriate. Therefore, it’s crucial for parents to actively monitor their children’s viewing habits, utilize parental controls, and engage in open discussions about online safety to ensure a positive and safe experience on the platform. Some characters in these videos seem to be copied from legitimate children’s shows like The Amazing Digital Circus, raising concerns about the safety of young viewers. This situation brings to mind the controversial "Elsagate" incident, where videos categorized as child-friendly contained inappropriate content. To recall, Elsagate involved videos on YouTube and YouTube Kids that were marked as safe for children but included disturbing themes. These often featured popular characters from family-oriented media without permission, sparking outrage and concern. As for any comments from the platform, YouTube hasn't responded to this latest discovery on Reddit. However, anyone following the story would know that the company has previously stated that it is investing heavily in blocking NSFW ads. The company also claimed that it is expanding the use of AI to detect and remove such content. However, it now seems all YouTube efforts have not had any major impact on the platform. FAQs Q1. How do I enable Restricted Mode on YouTube? Answer. To enable Restricted Mode, sign in to your YouTube account, click on your profile picture, go to “Settings,” select “General,” and toggle on “Restricted Mode.” This helps filter out potentially mature content. Q2. What is YouTube Kids and how does it work? Answer. YouTube Kids is a separate app designed for children, offering a safer environment with age-appropriate content. Parents can set up profiles, choose content levels (Preschool, Younger, Older), and hand-pick videos or channels for their kids. Q3. How can I set up a supervised account for my child on YouTube? Answer. To set up a supervised account, link your child’s Google Account to your own. In your YouTube settings, go to “Parent Settings” and select “YouTube (parent supervised).” This allows you to manage content settings and monitor your child’s activity. Q4. Can I block specific channels on YouTube for my child? Answer. Yes, you can block specific channels on YouTube to ensure your child doesn’t access content you find inappropriate. To do this, follow the below steps- Sign in to YouTube with your linked parent account. Navigate to “Settings” and select “Parent Settings.” Choose your child’s profile from the list. In the profile settings, you’ll find an option to manage content. Here, you can search for specific channels and block them. Once blocked, these channels will not appear in your child’s recommendations or search results. This feature helps you tailor the content your child can access, providing a safer viewing experience. Q5. How do I use the Family Link app to manage YouTube settings? Answer. The Family Link app allows you to manage your child’s YouTube settings comprehensively. Here’s how you can set up: First, open the Family Link app on your device and select your child’s profile. Tap on “Controls” and then “Content restrictions.” From here, choose “YouTube.” You will see various options to manage your child’s YouTube experience. You can enable or disable Restricted Mode, which filters out potentially mature content. You can set up supervised experiences, where you can approve or block specific videos and channels. The app also allows you to monitor your child’s watch history and screen time, giving you greater control over their online activity.
