Gurman explains, “The idea is that the doorbell could automatically unlock the door for a home’s residents by scanning their face — just like Face ID lets them into their iPhone.” Apple already supports several third-party HomeKit-compatible locks available through its online store, but a doorbell with built-in facial recognition marks a new direction. Gurman suggests that the doorbell could potentially integrate with various third-party HomeKit locks, although it’s not confirmed. Apple might even partner with a specific lock manufacturer to offer an all-in-one package. However, the project is still in its early stages.
