Highlights CCI investigates Apple for potentially misusing its power in the app market Apple allegedly forces app makers to use its payment system exclusively The case initiated by "Together We Fight Society" highlights high fees and restrictive practices Apple's iOS market share in India has increased fivefold over five years India's competition watchdog has Apple in its sights. A new report suggests the tech giant might be misusing its power in the app market. Let's break down what's happening. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has been looking into Apple since 2021. They wanted to know if Apple was forcing app makers to use its payment system unfairly. Now, a secret report says Apple might be doing just that. Aditya Kalra writes for Reuters: An investigation by India’s antitrust body has found that Apple exploited its dominant position in the market for app stores on its iOS operating system, engaging “in abusive conduct and practices”, a confidential report seen by Reuters showed. “Apple App Store is an unavoidable trading partner for app developers, and resultantly, app developers have no choice but to adhere to Apple’s unfair terms, including the mandatory use of Apple’s proprietary billing and payment system,” the CCI unit said in the June 24 report. What the Report Says India's Competition Watchdog CCI Investigates Apple Over App Store Payment Practices The CCI thinks Apple has too much control over how apps reach iPhone users. They say app makers have no choice but to follow Apple's rules, including using Apple's payment system. This could be unfair to both app makers and users. Apple's Response CCI investigates Apple for potentially misusing its power in the app market Apple says it's not doing anything wrong. They argue they're a small player in India, where most phones use Android. But the CCI disagrees, saying iPhones are becoming more popular in India. Global Pressure Apple allegedly forces app makers to use its payment system exclusively This isn't just happening in India. Other countries are also looking at how Apple runs its App Store. The European Union recently said Apple might be breaking their tech rules. The case in India began with a small non-profit group called "Together We Fight Society". They said Apple's fees, which can be up to 30%, hurt competition. Later, other groups, including some Indian startups, joined in with similar complaints. The Payment Problem The case initiated by "Together We Fight Society" highlights high fees and restrictive practices The CCI report points out that Apple doesn't let app makers use other payment methods. They also don't allow apps to include links to other ways to pay. The CCI thinks this goes against Indian competition laws. Apple's Growing Presence in India Apple's iOS market share in India has increased fivefold over five years While Apple says it's a small player in India, the numbers tell a different story. In mid-2024, about 3.5% of smartphones in India were using iOS. That might sound small, but it's five times more than five years ago. Apple is growing fast in India. The CCI will review this report. Apple will get a chance to respond. If the CCI decides Apple broke the rules, they could fine the company or make them change how they do business in India. The Bigger Picture Competition Commission of India (CCI) has been looking into Apple since 2021 This case is part of a global trend. Governments worldwide are looking closely at big tech companies. They want to make sure these companies aren't using their size and power unfairly. For Apple, this could mean big changes in how they run the App Store, not just in India but maybe around the world. This case shows that even big tech companies like Apple face challenges as countries try to make sure the app market is fair for everyone. It's a complex issue that could change how we use our phones and buy apps in the future. As the investigation continues, both app developers and iPhone users in India will be watching closely to see what happens next. FAQs What is the Competition Commission of India (CCI) investigating?
