Apple’s ambitious plans for an AI-powered Siri in iOS 19 are facing delays. According to Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter, Apple is still set to roll out its new “LLM Siri” system and a unified backend for handling both simple and complex requests. This is why the more conversational Siri experience, similar to ChatGPT, is running behind schedule.
Here’s our full report.
Initially, Apple planned to introduce a smarter and more natural Siri alongside iOS 19.
However, Gurman reports that this upgrade won’t be ready in time for the expected June announcement. Employees in Apple’s AI division now believe that this enhanced Siri may not reach users until iOS 20 “at best.”
Despite these setbacks, Apple is still on track to release three new Siri features with iOS 18.5 in May. While these improvements may bring some enhancements, they won’t deliver the fully conversational experience that Apple had initially aimed for.
Apple’s AI push, branded as Apple Intelligence, also appears to be struggling. According to Gurman, internal data suggests that real-world usage of Apple Intelligence features is “extremely low,” indicating that current capabilities aren’t resonating with users.
Unfortunately, iOS 19 won’t bring major consumer-facing AI updates, as Apple is still focused on delivering previously announced features. Gurman explains, “Everything I’ve heard suggests that iOS 19 will not include any significant consumer-facing changes to Apple Intelligence. A big reason for that is the amount of time Apple is still spending working to get the features announced last year out the door. It’s challenging to move on to next year’s release before this year’s operating system updates have rolled out to customers.”
If Apple remains on this timeline, significant Apple Intelligence advancements may not arrive until iOS 20, expected in June 2027. While Apple is known for taking its time to refine new features, this delay means users will have to wait much longer for a true AI-driven Siri experience.
