ASUS To Reveal Upgraded ROG Ally X Handheld Gaming Console on 2nd June

Highlights

  • Massive battery capacity increase for extended gaming sessions.
  • Features over 16GB of RAM and upgradable 2280 M.2 SSD storage.
  • Retains the powerful AMD Z1 Extreme chip for high performance.
  • Enhanced design with modular joystick components and sleek black colour option.

Just one year after launching their first handheld gaming PC, the ROG Ally, ASUS is preparing to release an enhanced version dubbed the ROG Ally X.

This next-generation portable gaming machine is slated to debut on June 2nd, packing a host of upgrades and improvements over its predecessor. Here’s a glimpse at what gamers can expect from the Ally X.

Battery Life Boosted to New Heights

One of the standout enhancements is a massive increase in battery capacity. According to ASUS SVP Shawn Yen, who was interviewed by The Verge, the Ally X won’t just offer 30-40% more juice – we’re talking “way more than that.”

This substantial battery upgrade directly addresses a common pain point for handheld devices, whose batteries often struggle with intensive gaming sessions.

Yen acknowledged ASUS took note of users strapping bulky external batteries to the original Ally to extend play time, prompting them to supersize the Ally X’s battery.

More RAM, Storage Upgradability

In addition to outlasting its predecessor, the Ally X will pack more than 16GB of RAM for smoother performance with demanding games.

It will also feature an upgradable 2280 M.2 SSD, allowing users to easily expand storage capacity down the line. The upgraded internals may come at a higher price point compared to the original Ally.

Beyond the under-the-hood boosts, the Ally X’s design is getting some polish too. A sleek black colour option is on the way, and ASUS is aiming to improve reparability with modular, interchangeable joystick components. The larger battery will likely make the console slightly heavier than the previous model.

Same Powerful AMD Chip

While the Ally X integrates many hardware enhancements, ASUS has opted to stick with the potent AMD Z1 Extreme chip that powered the original. This diverges from Valve’s approach of co-developing a custom AMD “Aerith” APU for the Steam Deck.

Both new and existing Ally owners will benefit from ASUS’ updated Armoury Crate SE 1.5 software. Touted as more intuitive, it offers improved game library layouts, search filters, sorting tools and a new light mode UI option among other refinements.

The Ally X was recently teased in an image on X, showing the black handheld PC tucked neatly into a cabinet. ASUS is definitely building hype around this supercharged refresh of their portable gaming platform. Let’s see what the company can actually deliver.
