It appears Google is gearing up for a major focus on its AI platform Gemini as 2025 approaches. In a recent CNBC report, it has been claimed that CEO Sundar Pichai at a recent strategy meeting emphasised that “scaling Gemini on the consumer side will be our biggest focus next year.”
The report claims “CEO Sundar Pichai said Google will introduce a number of AI features in the first half of the year.”
The aim reportedly is to establish Gemini as a key player in the consumer space.
The company rightly anticipates that the Gemini app, accessible at gemini.google.com., will become its next first-party application to reach half a billion monthly users. Currently, Google boasts 15 such services with Maps recently joining Search, Gmail, Android, Chrome, Play and YouTube in surpassing 2 billion monthly users.
“In history, you don’t always need to be first, but you have to execute well and really be the best in class as a product,” Pichai said, highlighting Google’s aim to achieve product excellence in 2025. He also acknowledged the company’s ongoing efforts to close gaps and establish leadership in AI.
In the meantime, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis shared that Gemini’s evolution will be rapid with products undergoing significant changes over the next year or two. He described the overarching goal as building a universal assistant, known internally as Project Astra, which “can seamlessly operate over any domain, any modality, or any device.”
CNBC reported that Astra will receive updates in the first half of 2025, possibly introducing camera and vision capabilities through Gemini Live. Currently being tested as a standalone application, Gemini Live is expected to integrate with the broader Gemini app for consumer use.
Hassabis addressed questions about subscription models during the recent Gemini 2.0 launch and stated that there are no “plans for this kind of subscription level.” He referred to a high-priced $200 per month tier like that of OpenAI.
