Qualcomm Technologies has unveiled the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 2 and W5 Gen 2 wearable platforms, designed to bring efficiency improvements, enhanced tracking, advanced connectivity, and slimmer smartwatch designs.
Speaking on the launch, Dino Bekis, VP & GM of Wearables & Mixed Signal Solutions at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., said, “With Snapdragon W5+ and W5 Gen 2 platforms, we continue to lead in wearable technology by enabling Wear OS to become the first operating system to integrate NB-NTN. This technology allows users to stay connected in the most remote locations, sending and receiving critical messages via satellite. This advancement underscores our commitment to ensure that users have more reliable communications and enhanced safety with the integration of evolving satellite technology capabilities in wearable platforms.”
The Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform debuts with the Google Pixel Watch 4 and will expand to more Wear OS smartwatches in the coming months. Here’s everything you need to know about the new wearable platforms.
Platform Lineup
Qualcomm is introducing two variants –
- W5+ Gen 2 – comes with a dedicated low-power co-processor that manages background tasks for greater efficiency.
- W5 Gen 2 – a streamlined version without the co-processor, designed for compact devices.
Snapdragon W5+ Gen 2 and W5 Gen 2 – Key Features
For the first time, wearable platforms now feature satellite communication, powered by Skylo’s Narrowband Non-Terrestrial Network (NB-NTN). This enables two-way emergency messaging directly from a smartwatch, allowing users in remote areas without mobile coverage to send SOS alerts when required.
Both platforms are built on a 4nm system-on-chip (SoC), balancing performance with power savings.

Snapdragon W5+ Gen 2 and W5 Gen 2 – Key Advancements
- Smarter location tracking – Location Machine Learning 3.0 improves GPS accuracy by up to 50%, even in challenging environments such as urban blocks or steep canyons.
- Reduced size and power use – the optimised RF front-end (RFFE) module is about 20% smaller than the previous generation and consumes less energy, enabling thinner devices with longer battery life.
- Efficient background processing – the always-on co-processor (W5+ Gen 2) now supports Wi-Fi, GNSS, and audio in ultra-low-power modes like Deep Sleep and Hibernate.
- Hybrid task handling – tasks such as display, sensor input, notifications, and audio processing can be offloaded, reducing the load on the main processor.
- Wear OS readiness – optimised for the latest Wear OS version, ensuring smooth performance, advanced smartwatch capabilities, and better multi-device integration.
