Apple Isn’t Planning Any “Meaningful’ Refresh of AirPods Max After Adding USB-C

0

Highlights

  • Apple has no “meaningful” plans to update the AirPods Max as reported by Mark Gurman.
  • AirPods Max were refreshed with a USB-C version earlier this year.
  • The AirPods Max are neither selling enough to justify development costs nor failing enough to be discontinued.

Many Apple fans were met with disappointment this year when Apple re-introduced the same AirPods Max only with USB-C and some new colours this time. There was no significant upgrade that many were hoping for. Now, the latest word is that Apple has no plans for future upgrades.

No Future Upgrades for AirPods Max

If you’ve been hoping for a big upgrade to Apple’s AirPods Max like a new chip, better noise cancellation, or other improvements, we suggest you don’t hold your breath.

According to Bloomberg’s trusted Apple reporter Mark Gurman, Apple has no “meaningful” plans to update the AirPods Max beyond the USB-C version introduced earlier this year.

Apple first launched the AirPods Max in December 2020 with a steep $549 price tag, and for nearly four years, they remained unchanged. In September 2024, Apple added a USB-C version and some refreshed colours, but that was the extent of the update. Features like the H2 chip or adaptive audio never made it to the lineup.

In his recent Power On newsletter, Gurman explains why – “The headphones aren’t a hot enough seller to justify pouring money into development, but they’re also not a big enough flop to kill them outright. If you’ve ever been to an upscale gym in Los Angeles or New York, you can see these $550 headphones have a market — even with the high price and outdated technology.

For now, Apple seems content to leave the AirPods Max as they are, with Gurman predicting they’ll stick around in their current form for the “foreseeable future.” This likely means it could be years before we see a significant refresh.

A price cut could make the AirPods Max more appealing but Gurman notes that Apple doesn’t have much reason to lower the cost.

Let’s hope these high-end headphones don’t languish on Apple’s website for another four years without updates but it seems that might just be the case.

 FAQs

Q1. Are there any significant upgrades planned for the AirPods Max?

Answer. No, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has no “meaningful” plans to update the AirPods Max beyond the USB-C version introduced earlier this year.

Q2. Why isn’t Apple updating the AirPods Max?

Answer. The AirPods Max are not selling enough to justify development costs, but they are also not failing enough to discontinue. Apple seems content to leave them as they are for the foreseeable future.

Q3. Will there be a price cut for the AirPods Max?

Answer. Mark Gurman notes that Apple doesn’t have much reason to lower the cost while a price cut could make the AirPods Max more appealing.

Meta – Apple will not significantly update AirPods Max beyond USB-C addition. No plans for new features due to moderate sales. Price cut unlikely, says Mark Gurman.

It appears things have not been going in favour of Grand Theft Auto 6 fans in all aspects. While the internet is already flooding with GTA 6 delay memes, a recent development has disappointed the fans further.

The Grand Theft Auto 6 fans were recently let down after a popular theory predicting the release date of the game’s second trailer was debunked.

Popular known as the “moon theory” amongst GTA fans, his theory suggested that Rockstar Games might will plan its trailer drops with specific lunar phases. It turns out Rockstar isn’t planning GTA 6’s marketing around the moon’s cycles.

After the first GTA 6 trailer was released nearly a year ago, fans have been eagerly trying to figure out when the next one will drop.

They’ve analyzed everything from Take-Two earnings calls to the pre-release strategies used for previous Rockstar games like GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

With no official updates from Rockstar, one particular theory gained traction among the community.

It started in September 2023, when Rockstar shared a promotional image for GTA Online featuring a Waning Gibbous moon. The real-life moon entered this phase on December 1, 2023, the same day Rockstar revealed the release date for GTA 6’s first trailer.

After the trailer, Rockstar released another GTA Online image showing a Waning Gibbous moon in November 2024. It sparked hope that a second trailer announcement might align with the lunar cycle once again.

Fans speculated that the next trailer could drop on November 22, 2024, when the Waning Gibbous phase ended. But that day has come and gone, with no new trailer or announcements from Rockstar, leaving the fanbase disappointed.

Many fans had pinned their hopes on the theory, especially since 9 AM ET is the usual announcement time for Rockstar and Take-Two passed without any updates.

However, there is still reason for hope even if the moon theory didn’t pan out as fans assumed.

Rockstar and Take-Two have repeatedly reaffirmed their confidence in GTA 6’s fall 2025 release window hinting that the next big reveal could be just around the corner.

So we can assume that while there is a delay, the wait for Trailer 2 might not be much longer.

FAQs

Q1. What was the “moon theory” regarding the GTA 6 trailer?

Answer. The ‘moon theory’ suggested that Rockstar Games might align its trailer drops with specific lunar phases but it was debunked as Rockstar isn’t planning GTA 6’s marketing around the moon’s cycles.

Q2. When did fans speculate the second trailer for GTA 6 would drop?

Answer. Fans speculated that the next trailer could drop on November 22, 2024, when the Waning Gibbous phase ended, but no new trailer or announcements were made on that date.

Q3. What reassurance do Rockstar and Take-Two provide about the GTA 6 release?

Answer. Rockstar and Take-Two have repeatedly reaffirmed their confidence in GTA 6’s fall 2025 release window, suggesting that the next big reveal could be just around the corner.

Google Maps Adopts New Version Number System for Android and iOS

0

Highlights

  • Google Maps has changed its version numbering system.
  • It is now following a format similar to other Google software.
  • This update will unify the version numbering system for both Android and iOS.
  • The update does not bring any noticeable changes for users.
image

Not every change that an app development team makes to popular apps has anything to do with the users. The latest Google Map update is similar in that context.

Google Maps has been rolling out several updates recently starting from Gemini integration and a new weather feature to the teal accent colour. The latest change, however, is a shift in how the app’s version numbers are structured.

For most Google apps, version numbers don’t indicate significant updates. As noted, “When Google applications go from, for example, version 4 -> 5, it doesn’t mean that there are big changes in that update.”

Google Maps was no exception, with its version numbers previously structured like 11.155.0103. The first number, which might suggest a major version change in other apps, last shifted from 10 to 11 in 2021. (On iOS, the numbering system has been entirely different, such as 6.142.0.)

Going forward, Google Maps will adopt a version format similar to other Google software like Play Services. The new structure looks something like 24.47.01.697822364. The first number likely corresponds to the year (2024), and the second indicates the week of the year.

On Android, users can find the version numbers for Google Maps by navigating to Settings > Apps. Scroll down to Maps and tap on it for the App info page. Next, scroll down to the very bottom of the page to check the Android version number for Google Maps.

Similarly, for iOS, users open the Google Maps app on iPhone and tap the profile icon on the right side of the search bar at the top. Tap on Settings > About, terms & privacy at the bottom to check the Version number.

image

This better reflects the app’s frequent updates many of which are released weekly, and highlights how most new features are controlled via server-side updates rather than app versions.

One advantage of this change is that Google Maps for Android and iOS will now share the same version numbering system.

This unified approach is already live on the iOS App Store and is expected to roll out via the Play Store soon. In the future, when Google specifies which version is required for new features, this consistent system will make things easier for users.

That said, this update doesn’t bring any noticeable changes for users. It’s more about consistency and clarity for the app’s versioning across platforms.

The Redmi A4 5G has entered the Indian market as a budget-friendly 5G smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 chipset. The phone will be available for purchase starting November 27 via Amazon, Mi.com and offline stores.

However, the launch comes with a significant drawback – it does not support Airtel’s 5G network in India. The smartphone works exclusively with Jio’s 5G network.

Here’s a closer look at the issue.

Why Redmi A4 5G Won’t Support Airtel’s 5G?

Redmi A4 5G: A budget-friendly 5G phone with selective network support

According to Redmi’s official product page, the Redmi A4 5G is compatible only with SA (Standalone) 5G networks and does not support NSA (Non-Standalone) networks. This limitation is the main reason it cannot connect to Airtel’s 5G, which currently relies on NSA technology.

SA-only 5G compatibility limits Redmi A4’s network options.

SA 5G uses dedicated network bands and new radio technologies for a more advanced deployment, while NSA 5G leverages existing 4G LTE infrastructure, making it cheaper and faster to implement. While SA 5G is technically superior, both types of 5G networks can deliver comparable experiences, including speeds of up to 1Gbps.

Airtel has announced plans to roll out SA 5G in India, with initial tests underway in locations like Bhubaneswar, Rewari and Chennai.

Redmi A4 5G launched in India with exclusive Jio 5G support.

However, nationwide availability is still a while away. This leaves Redmi A4 5G users dependent on Jio for 5G connectivity.

For Airtel users, the phone’s key feature—5G support—becomes irrelevant, making it a less attractive option unless they are willing to switch networks.

An innocent-looking scene in Sivakarthikeyan’s Tamil movie Amaran has caused unexpected distress for engineering student VV Vaageesan.

In the film, actress Sai Pallavi’s character, Indu Rebecca Verghese, casually throws a crumpled paper with a phone number on it at Sivakarthikeyan’s character, Major Mukund Varadarajan.

Unfortunately, the phone number displayed in the scene belongs to Vaageesan, leading to chaos in his life.

Vaageesan has now filed a ₹1.1 crore lawsuit against the filmmakers, accusing them of causing “untold hardships and mental agony.” He has demanded the removal of his number from the movie and compensation for the distress he has endured.

Vaageesan described the disruptions to The Hindu, which first reported the story. “Since the calls keep coming, I have to switch my phone to silent mode. I’m worried I might miss emergency calls or important messages from family or friends. I’ve had this number for two years—it’s linked to my bank accounts and shared with many contacts. I can’t afford to change it,” he explained.

He added, “I’m unable to even book a cab or call the driver because of continuous incoming calls.”

Number Added in Truecaller To Add to The Problem

To make matters worse, someone saved Vaageesan’s number on the caller ID app Truecaller under the name “Vaageesan Indu Rebbbica VV.” Truecaller allows users to manually add and label contacts and it seems a fan of the character Indu Rebecca Verghese might have linked the number with this name.

Since Vaageesan’s number was already connected to his name in Truecaller’s database, users who searched for the number saw this new and bizarre name combination.

This prompted even more calls with fans of Sai Pallavi and others trying to contact “Indu Rebecca Verghese” or “Major Mukund’s wife.”

The student reported the issue to his telecom provider, flagging the number as spam. A senior company official confirmed receiving the complaint and said they are working on a response, but no further details were provided.

Vaageesan initially tried to resolve the issue informally by tagging the movie’s director Rajkumar Periyasamy and lead actor Sivakarthikeyan on social media requesting their help.

However, he received no response, which left him with no option but to pursue legal action.

His legal notice seeks the removal of his number from the movie and compensation for the distress caused. As of now, the filmmakers have not responded to the notice.
